    Nothing to write home about....

Soooo.....I just ordered 90 dollars worth of food (yes, I am a glutton and it was not just for me....) from this place....An hour later, the "food" arrives...I live in the mid 70s and 1st ave... 1) Naan (Indian unleavened bread):undercooked. 2) Chicken tikka masala: Unremarkable and a virulent orange color that flouresced in dim lighting. 3)Some chick pea dish...guessing the chaat: Straight from a can....marked..."chickpeas" the list goes on...in the greatest city in the world....where options are numerous...average just doen't cut it.

    You be the judge

I walked in and ordered take-away. The waiter actually nodded towards the menu by the entrance instead of handing me a menu. I paid for my dinner and offered the waiter a dollar tip. No reaction, no thanks from him. I waited about ten minutes; twice they brought over take-away bag and twice it was someone else's order. When finally they brought it, the guy tells me, "you were not charged for the mango lassi." I look through my pocket and did not have enough to cover it; I protested that I had paid what was asked of me--he just took whatever money I had and I left. The food was good. The papadums weren't fresh and crispy, however. But service is non-existent in this place. Never in my life have I been pointed to menus. The staff at Bawarchi are ill-mannered and arrogant. Menupages is a rich source of information; unless you're by yourself and are in need of an indian fix, I would spend my money elsewhere.

    Waste of an afternoon buffet

Hi, I am Indian and I know Indian food but I call it just "Food". So the food here at this place was just short of being terrible. I went for the lunch buffet and it was NOT at all worth the money. This is the first Indian buffet where I went that didnt have any "paneer" (Goat cheese) based dish for the buffet. I would say that is very vegetarian unfriendly but it was also not liked by my other friends who are non-veg. I cant say much about the chicken dishes but the vegetables were not cooked well. I am not a good cook but honestly after eating here, I thought that if they can be in business, may be I need to open my own restaurant. Anyways, Long story short, very very disappointed. My favorite part of the meal was when I left the place. Usually, I look forward to dessert and have at least two helpings. The "kheer" (rice pudding) they had was so bad, I didnt even finish the one helping I got. How can they not even put a single almond in rice pudding? No garnishing, nothing. Not even a hint of Kesar (Saffron). Bottom line. Place is a flop. Service was bad too, the waiter seemed to be surprised that brown people walked into the place. Clearly, no indian people come to eat there that often! (rightly so, you have to be ignorant about Indian cousine to come to eat there) Anyways, I am not going there again. Good luck to you if you decide to go there!

    No Longer Buffet

To my dismay, this place is no longer serving a lunch buffet. Not sure if the rent went up but my coworkers and I were very disappointed because it was the best Indian food at a great price.

    Delicious

This place has some of the most flavorful Indian food in NYC - definitely the best on the UES. However, the portions are quite small compared to other Indian restaurants. Personally, I'd rather pay more for better quality, but if you want bigger, not better, you should look elsewhere. Try the Garwal Bhel Bhal and the Ka-Chori - they are amazing!

Used to be great, don't know what happened...

We ordered in from here about once a week for all of 2009 and most of 2010, and really enjoyed it, but since this past summer, the last 4 orders we placed were not good at all. Way too spicy (so much so that I literally threw out my last order without eating it), not white meat, and just not as good in general. I am really sad as this was my go to place. I guess they must have changed the chef or changed management or something. I am now looking for a new place.

    attitude

Never again!!! dude picked up the phone, says in a very rude tone - "Minimum $60 order, or we don't do it". I kept telling him that we had ordered from there in the past, but he quipped back rudely again - "Doesn't matter. Are you going to order for $60?" Order was for $50, but he kept on the attitude. I hung up, don't need any of that. A friend called them in the past at 9pm - some fellow picked up again - says pretty rudely again - "We are closing the kitchen in 15 mins. If you are going to order in 2 minutes, else there is no point" Never again!
