Excellent Choice
The service and food quality were exceptional. Made us truly feel as if we were royalty from beginning to end. We will certainly make an effort to visit again when we return to NY City. A true italian experience for a reasonable price.

Our new favorite place
We tried Basso56 because it's around the corner from our apartment, but we keep going back for the terrific food and the congenial, gracious staff (very reminiscent of waiters in Italy). Half-orders of pasta are generous and a bargain. The baby artichoke salad (with shaved parm, lemon and truffle oil) and grilled calamari (on an eggplant puree) appetizers alone are worth the trip. Nightly specials add to the adventure. They have one of our favorite wines, Nero D'Abola, by the glass. We love the look of the place--modern, tasteful, yet casual. We went last Saturday and are going back this Saturday.

A cozy, warm restaurant
From the moment you walk into Basso 56 and are greeted by warm friendly smiling staff, you sense that you are welcome and that they are dedicated to insure your experience will be satisfactory and pleasant. The service provided is very attentive while not intimidating a feeling of being rushed. Our server, Dan, was very knowledgeable of the menu items, the specials, and their preparation. The wine list is rather extensive so we explained the attributes we desired in a wine and his recommendation turned out to be perfect. Appetizers, entrees and deserts were prepared well, served hot and were scrumptious. Portion size was just right, not too much, not too little. The dining area, restrooms and glimpse we had of the kitchen were all immaculatly clean. The only slight negative is that it became a bit noisy probably due to the concrete walls and low ceiling. Still, we and our guests, a client and his wife visiting from South America, were all very satisfied and enjoyed this wonderful dining experience. We would recommend Basso 56 to anyone and will add it to our list of distinctive restaurants in New York City.

Great start to a great evening...
Paulo and his crew do a great job! Food was very good; drinks were very good; service was exceptional. Our first trip to NYC had a great start at BASSO56. If you're looking for a good local spot, NOT TOURISTY, you won't be disappointed!

Great food at great prices!
Delivers great italian experience with many specials and knowledgable waiters. Though it may be a little loud due to brick walls and low ceiling, the food is awesome and comes at a great price. Calamari is not like traditional fried calamari. Here the whole squid is served whole and it is not fried. Very clean bathrooms with scented candles. 2 appetizers, 1 entree split for two people, $45. I heard their chocolate crepe is insane!

Decent spot decent price
Service was attentive and great even though it seemed that one guy does it all from taking reservations and coat check to seating and delivering specials, to taking orders, suggesting wine, and delivering food. Food was good basic Italian with fresh ingrediants that reminded me of what you might find in your refrigerator. No fancy or arcane combinations which gives the food a homey feel. The chef puts it together nicely and both my companion and I felt very satisfied at the end. Wine is a bargain.

Awesome! We felt like royalty.
Our waiter Dan was attentive, and very helpful with food and wine selections. I have to say his job is not difficult since there are no bad choices at this restaurant. We were a party of 4 before the theatre on a Saturday night. We had a reservation, and no wait for our table. The bartender made THE BEST Manhatten. There were a few large tables welcoming families. pasta is homemade and cooked to a perfect aldente. I can't say enough, I wish they were in CT, but atleast I'm only a couple hours away. Finally, yes, the chocolate crepes are to die for!
