Delicious Cozy find
We came here for an impromptu pre-theater dinner. Everything was great the staff friendly, the food delicious and the wine list superb and nicely Italian. We had the beef carpacio as a starter. Absolutely delicious, tender fresh with nice nuanced mayo sides. I followed with a porchini pasta and my boyfriend the seafood resoto. The smells were enough to get your mouth watering. Highly recomend

Would Go back
Went to dinner after the theater and found a gem on 56th street. The food that we had was excellent and the portions were of good size. We had the mussels and the grilled eggplant for starters. Our entree's were the Cod, Seafood Crepes and Sea Bass and fish was done to perfection, moist and not dried out. Excellent wine list.

Superb and consistent - year after year!
We have been to Basso56 several times, and started with the old Basso Est downtown. The entire experience is always wonderful. Alex makes sure of that year after year. Menu is diverse and the food (we have had many different selections) is plentiful and flavorful. Wine list is extensive with many reasonably priced selections. Atmosphere is chic but also cozy. Service (Alex again) is unmatched. Prices are quite reasonable. If you haven't discovered this mid-town treasure yet, you are missing something special. We will be back again.

Fabulous night!
I celebrated a friend’s 30th birthday there last night and had a wonderful 2 ½ hour long dinner. For a Monday night, Basso56 was bustling, fun and hip. Our waiter was super nice (and had an adorable Italian accent), knew about all of the food on the menu and made some perfect recommendations. He started us off with bread and complimentary olives and bruschetta. Four of us shared a salad and grilled Calamari which was really large and perfectly seasoned. For my entrée I chose one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had, the Fagottino Alla Polpa Di Aragosta (homemade crepes filled with confit of fresh lobster). My friends had the roasted codfish (presented beautifully!), gnocchi and bolognese. We were drinking, chatting and catching up all night and never felt rushed and our food was brought out at the perfect times (nothing is worse then when an entrée is delivered while still eating an appetizer). We ended our meal with the crepes filled with warm chocolate sauce and complimentary Limoncello. It was a perfect night and a great value. I live across the street and will definitely be back again. I wish I had stopped in sooner!

A nice surprise away from 46th St
My husband and I come into the city several times a year to see a show. We usually find a place with a prixe-fixe on 46th St. But this time our show was on 54th and it was cold and windy, so we didn't want to walk far. We were pleasantly surprised with Basso 56! The staff was friendly and attentive. The servings were generous and delicious. My muscles appetizer was enough for a meal in itself! I have already told several friends and relative about this place. Bravissimo!

Amazing food, great service, great value
We discovered this little gem when we were invited for a business lunch. First thing that struck me on the menu is the choices for the $18.95 lunch special. Normally, you would have 2-3 appetizer and 2-3 entree selections. Basso has about 10 apps, and 11 entrees, and the portions are very generous, plus, soda/coffee/tea is included in the price. We have tried grilled calamari, very light and tasty, mussels in tomato broth, a nice, generous portion, and for the meal, some people had skirt steak with french fries, pan-seared chicken, fish of the day, and caesar salad with grilled shrimp. All dishes tasted delicious. We returned two weeks later to repeat the experience and have officially designated Basso 56 as our choice restaurant to take co-workers to celebrate birthday parties. The room is very simple and the decor is minimlistic, which is totally fine by me.

Warm Italian Restaurant, could be better
This Italian place received great reviews and we wanted to go someplace special. The restaurant is surprisingly well lit although we were seated close to the door and it got a little chilly. The server who i also presume was the owner was very cordial and knowledgable about wines as well as the dinner menu. our appetizer with eggplant was delicious . they also served us complimentary Bruschetta. The entree was this delicious Ravioli with sage butter sauce. also the dessert was pretty good- Chocolate Souffle. Overall , i was pleased with the restaurant , although it wasnt very romantic.
