ugh
I love the old "NY vibe" in restaurants, but this place is beyond terrible. The portions are tiny, the food is your average deli food at best and the service is terrible as expected. I useto stop in once a month up until the beginning of 2005 and now will never go back. I dont know what happened, but the quality has become awful. at the same time, the prices are outrageous.

The best
If you know what good bagels and lox are, you go here. If you complain about service and ambiance, go to Bruegger's and get a boiled donut.

overpriced with a creepy atmosphere
Stopped by after so much hype. I found the place to be old and dirty. The lox with eggs was way overpriced. The Oj not bad! The guy behind the counter creeped me out. Go to Zabars.

Food First
Love this place. You get what you pay for, pricey, but worth it...their Nova and Lox rule my life now. Waiters could use a bath, but it's part of their charm. No Credit Cards, but they allow checks! First time I’ve used my checkbook, since 1996. Been hearing about their poor service and bad attitude on these posts: but hey, I’d rather have places like these, than the Disneyfied places that have been popping in around the area for over a decade.

Amazing!
Came here with my fam last weekend...we loved it! It's old and very New York, and the lox was the best we've ever had. The waiter was SO funny and he gave us a sample of all the fish so my mom could decide which she wanted. We will def come back next time we are going to the big Apple.

An Unlikeable Time
I have lived in NY for about 2 years and I am a definite "foodie"! I have heard about Barney Greengrass since I moved so when my parents came to visit recently I thought this would be a great slice of New York to take them to. If you don't mind greasy waiters who look like they haven't bathed in a few days, rude "colorful" attitudes, truly over-priced cuisine, and a rushed dining experience on a relaxing Sunday, this place is for you. If you expect good service, respectful attitudes, and a decent omelette, go somewhere else! Their fish is delicious but after the way you're treated in the restaurant, it would prove difficult to stomach even the most amazing sturgeon. You can find better fish and service anywhere else in NY. The hostess literally "swung" by our table as we were finishing up our coffee and said "you need to come and pay at the register, we have people waiting." We had been there a very lengthy 45mins. Get over yourself "Barney Greengrass".

Don't bother
I live 3 blocks from Barney Greengrass. Every few years I read terrific reviews and decide that I must have had a bad experience the last time I went there. So, I go back and have another bad experience. Never again. The last trip, I ordered Nova on a bagel. I got instead Lox on a bagel plus an argument from the waiter who insisted that it wasn't salty and they couldn't have made a mistake. He was wrong. Also, they toasted the bagel and cut it in half. Just like they do in a bodega. I didn't ask for it to be toasted. The only reason to toast a bagel is if it is not fresh. If you want quality nova or sturgeon, go to Murray's or even better, go to Russ & Daughters. They remember what fish is supposed to taske like.
