Doesn't live up to the hype

After several people (chronic eat-outers as opposed to me, a home-cooker) recommended the Barking Dog for delivery and checking out the seemingly yummy menu, I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, my meal was a disappointment. Delivery took more than twice as long as it was supposed to (1 hr to the estimated 25 min). In NYC, the wait times are often a bit longer, but that was rough. Then, the meal. The green salad did, admittedly, have decently fresh, non--iceberg ingredients, but it was bitter and unwashed-tasting. The dressing was not good, some kind of really watered down, bland ranch. But the salad, unfortunately, was gourmet compared to my entree, the pan seared chicken breast (note: it was actually a leg and thigh, 2 fatty, unchewable dark-meat cuts). Supposedly it comes with a sun-dried tomato & wild mushroom ragu. What I actually received was an again watered-down plain tomato sauce (more of a broth actually) with no more than 2 regular white mushrooms, tops. There were none of the advertised fizzled onions; instead there were 3 practically raw (not even crisp-tender), very small florets of broccoli. The creamy black pepper polenta was gluey and over-peppered (and I tend to go heavy on the fresh pepper). I would not recommend ordering their dinners (The okay salad gives me a feeling there's a slight chance the sandwiches would be marginally better--apparently you can order off the lunch menu for dinner too).

    Great food, great prices

My husband and I frequent this place for brunch and bring our dog w/ us in warm weather for the outdoor seating (staff always kindly bring him a dish of water). The food is always great, rarely do we have a dish we do not like, and for about the same price as the greasy diners in the area, My one complaint is that the service can be spotty, especially when they are busy. On several occasions I have witnessed people getting seated, but then waiting 5+ min before they are brought a menu. One couple had to ask for menus 3x's before they finally got it, while other people seated after them got menus right away. For us, sometimes it will take a few requests before we are brought our check. Otherwise, the service is always friendly. We went here for dinner a few times as well and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. We are leaving the neighborhood soon and will surely miss this place!

    Birthday fun!

One of my best friends just turned 23 over this past weekend and it was a well anticipated birthday so we planned a BIG birthday dinner on the Barking Dog patio to accomodate 18 people. The service was superb. Our waitress was attentive, courteous and professional. There was a bit of a wait before the waitress came back so we could place our orders, but it was worth it; the food was soo yummy and I had enough to take home and have for my lunch the next day! I would definitely go back for any occasion. Definitely a spot to reccomend.

    Great Brunch

Barking Dog makes you feel like you've stepped outside the city. It's cozy, quaint, and delicious - with reasonable prices for large portions, and a fantastic brunch menu. I would recommend sticking with breakfast items. The banana pecan pancakes and the chocolate cherry pancakes are equally fantastic. Definitely try the stuffed french toast if it's on special. It's the perfect alternative to the greasy diners.

    Would not recommend

After reading reviews, my wife and I tried this restaurant. Not a good choice. The mac n- cheese was dry and bland. The wings were small and uninspiring. Many other better options in Murray Hill.

    Love This Place

I live just up the street from the Barking Dog, and I think this is one of the best places in the neighborhood for a delicious brunch. They have amazing sandwiches and terrific eggs. Everything always tastes incredibly fresh, and the prices are very reasonable. Try it out!
