    Just not that good

I've gone to this place a number of times now, I like the fact that you can sit and read if you have some time to kill. I just wish the food or service was better. Tonight I had the fried chicken, overcooked to a dense dry mass, the crispy batter hardly clinging to it. The vegetables were just as dry and unseasoned. And the biscuit was so dense and tough you could hammer nails with it. When I went to pay, the girl at the register never did get off the phone with her friend, and stared at me with the "what do you want?" look when I pointed out she had shortchanged me five dollars on my change. I wish I could like this place better. I wish they'd just try a little.

    Rude management

The food was ok, but when they charged me more for my entree than the price listed on my menu, and I pointed this out to the waiter, he informed me that the menu was wrong. I complained, and asked to see the manager who was rude and discourteous. I will not return.

    Lack of Service

What an unpleasant experience? twice! Besides diner food being overpriced, ?Umm? hello? I believe I was seated for a reason. Anyone?? Eat outside if you do dare this place, for the inside leaves you eating with the clamoring of pans ringing in your ears. Oh, and just because they fail to notify patrons of this ?tidbit? on the menu, and the waitress decided to leave me in the dark as well? No Credit Cards. Yes, they requested I go across the way and go to an ATM for payment after the check was delivered and she rejected my card due to their policy. Of course found it only necessary to allocate her tip to the machine service charge. Food was nothing to return to, especially with hiigh prices they serve with it.

    Great Breakfast

I don't know how valid my opinion is seeing as how I'm not a native New Yorker. Recently, I was visiting and I went to the Barking Dog for breakfast. About six dollars will get you eggs, harshbrowns, fruit, a biscuit, and your choice of meat, and it was very tasty! Their coffee was also good, I agree about the servers being a little snobby.

How can I put this nicely?

I sure wish that this was a positive review because I live in the building right next door. But it seems that every time we go here we have a problem. The order often gets messed up. I usually have to ask for water refills. The food is average at best. They've tried to pass off velveeta as cheddar. (I know velveeta when I see it!) And when we complain they are a bit snobby about it. The prices are very cheap but apparently you get what you pay for.

    Great breakfasts

I have had breakfasts here over one hundred times, including this morning. On weekdays, bacon and eggs, great home fries and fresh baked muffin is about six dollars. In addition, their coffee is really good, as opposed to the awful stuff served up in Greek coffee shops. That remains an eternal mystery to me, btw. Why do Greek coffee shops serve such bad coffee?

    Comfort Food and Very Cozy

Pros: Have eaten at the Barking Dog for the past five or six years. Favorites: Turkey Burger -- the best! Shepherd's Pie -- excellent -- and they always have a terrific Shiraz. This place in great in winter, very warm and cozy. Also great in summer if you can get a seat outside in the sun (that is, if you like the sun). If not, sitting outside in the front provides lots of shade and a prime spot for people-watching. Cons: Of course, the credit card thing, but if you find yourself stuck -- run across the street to the Duane Reade ATM -- they only charge 99 cents. Also, the scrambled eggs here could do with a bit more fluff. Otherwise, one of my favorite neighborhood places.
