disapointment
First time I went to The Barking Dog I enjoyed it even though the service was slow. I thought it was because I was with a larger group. My food was good and I left happy. The second time I went it was night and day. The service was not good at all. I had to practically get up to ask for my coffee that I had ordered. When I finally got a waitress to take our order she barely was listening to us which is why our orders turned out wrong. Then she brought my plate it was stone cold and my friend and I had to wait for her order for another 10 minutes. I thought this was a great place but now I have no interest in returning because it's overpriced

Delicious Dive
When we're in the mood for a great (and we do mean great) burger and all the fixings, the Barking Dog is where we go. Easily the best burger, served on toasted rosemary Focaccia bread and accompanied by a heavenly slaw. Choosing between the spicy curly fries and the beer-battered onion rings is too painful so we get an order of each and share. On those rate occasions when we can bear to order something else, shepherd's pie is delicious and hearty. Regardless of the entree choice, a Cobb salad is a requirement as it's hands-down the best in the city. So good, in fact, that we sometimes order it just to take it home. Portions of everything, including salads, are huge so plan on a doggy bag - no pun intended :) The service is sleepy and indifferent and the prices are not dirt cheap. But they become more reasonable when you see that each order can feed two. In addition, not much can be said for the atmosphere although it does have a neighborhood feel. Seating by the windows is pleasant but not terribly comfortable on what are, essentially, glorified folding chairs. The inside of the restaurant offers a few comfy booths but it's dark and a bit dreary. But, this is not romantic dining. This is a (hopefully) rare treat of grease, saturated fat and cholesterol good enough to make you lick your fingers!

Really wanted to love it
I will be honest, the food was good, no complaints about that, even though the order was messed up and waited almost an hour for our food and then the waitress forgot one thing and had to put the order in and it never did arrive before we were done ... the water was filled continually ( great!) but the waitress was overworked and stretched to her limit ( I think she was the ONLY one there!) so for the money you pay the service was attempted but not delivered , to bad..I really wanted to like this place ...

At least my dogs were happy
Where to begin...Host gave me attitude about my 11 week old's stroller and then my 2 dogs...Only to wait for 20 minutes to get water then another 10 for the 2nd waitress to come by and appologise, 10 minutes later we put our order in. Bacon cheeseburger medium with american and jack cheese/onion rings and the italian sandwich for my wife...20 minutes later my burger arrives on crispy foccacia with no american or bacon...sent back and told thats they are out of hamburger rolls...10 minutes later here comes the burger with american and the charred remains of bacon and a now very well done burger. Heres the kicker, after an excruciating 30 minutes waiting for the server to ask how things were I asked for the check...low and behold 43 dollars for a bacon cheese burger/onion rings/italian sandwich and 2 beers...when I asked if this was correct i got the BLANKEST stare in the known universe from the cashier....too bad...used to be good for breakfast...will never return again

Wish I found this sooner!
I went for lunch with my aunt today for the first time. I've lived on the UES for the past year and have always passed the Barking Dog but never went in and boy, am I glad I did! The food is excelletn. I had the Cobb Salad-- and when the menu says "crispy bacon" they are serious. It's perfectly crisp. The blueberry muffins are to die for! The joint was a little noisy-- it's family friendly so there are lots of kids (mostly well behaved!) and the wait staff was very nice, though slightly rushed (although I suppose you could call it "efficient", too). I paid less for my awesome salad here than I would at one of those "make you own salad" places. Really, in this economy, or any economy, this is a wonderful restaurant and I will definitely be returning. Also, breakfast is served until 4pm everyday so that's incentive for those days you wake up late! Quality food, realistic prices, served with a smile. What more could you ask for?!

Maybe for breakfast, but otherwise? No
I heard good things about this place. But I was very disapointed. My wrap was gummy and though the meat was nicely cooked in it, they neglected to include the menu-promised cheese. I asked for a change in the bread type given and was refused without an upcharge. This is a restaurant that offers bread choices on their menu for other sandwiches, but this one? No. It was awful and very small. The burger my husband got had to be sent back to be properly cooked (it arrived nearly raw) but was juicy and flavorful. It does NOT come with french fries, though a big mistake. Luckily, my wrap did, so he had them anyway. We went in an off-hour (about 3pm) and so it was nearly empty and we still received incredibly slow service. I wouldn't ever recommend this place to anyone with so many great places to go in NYC.
