    Good food, horrible service

Have been here twice, both times the food was good, but the waitstaff was at best disinterested and at worst openly hostile. I went in on a really slow night to have dinner, was basically ignored the whole time, and then was given a check with the gratuity included (after 7 years working in restaurants, I've never heard of putting automatic gratuity on a check for one person). Upon paying the check, the waitress confronted me, furious that I had not added an EXTRA tip to the one she gave herself. From other reviews I've read this seems to be quite common here.....there are hundreds of great restaurants in NYC, folks, don't waste your time with this one....

    Fine in a Pinch

Located nearby, Cafe Bari became our substitute. Decor was sparse - three giant lampshades/lights suspended from the ceiling (which was high), and a wooden frame/art piece. Having said that, the restaurant space was narrow, so it was about right. Lots of windows & plenty of light. We were seated immediately. Service was quick and friendly. Burger was expensive - around $20 with the added charage for grilled onions - but it was delicious. The Fettucini Alfredo (with grilled chicken added) was also good, but again it was $20. Good coffee.

    Pricey but great food

My daughters and I went here a couple of months ago just because we were in the neighborhood. We really loved the food. the salads large and the French fries fantastic the only spoiler was the bill. 3 of us ate on the light side and we still came up with a bill over $60.00. The tip is included which I prefer it not be. The service though was fine maybe because it wasn't busy. Anyway, my daughters can't wait to go back: French fries for my 10 year old and creme brulee for my sophisticated 15 year old. Oh, and the place is cute. blue and white if I can remember it correctly.

    Not the best service

My daughter and I ate at Cafe Bari. I thought it was overpriced for what we ordered but we were hungry so we stood to eat. I had a breakfast wrap, a cup of coffee and water. My daughter had a Belgiun waffle and a glass of orange juice and our bill till was all said and done was close to $40. The glass of orange juice was $5 alone I could have purchased a whole gallon at that price. Then when I used my visa is seen gratuity was tacked on but still a space to leave a tip-not sure what was up with that. The food was good but I am sure there is somewhere else just as good and cheaper. And never once did the servers come to ask us how everything was or if we needed anything. Not very good service.

    Service? There was service?

My three girfriends and I stopped for a late lunch around 2, while shopping in SOHO. We were seated right away, and were literally sharing the space with the people seated next to us. It took 25 minutes to get our drinks, which came out one at a time. One of us didn't even get out drink- and the margarita was horrible, as well as one of the mixed drinks. The Pom martini was tasty. Waitress forgot about our appetizer, which we didn't get, and the bus boy actually delivered our entrees to us. Food was really really good. Margherita pizza, cheese ravioli, chicken wrap, and moz sandwich. We called the manager over, as the drink and appetizer that we never received were on the bill , as well as a 20% tip. He removed all discrepencies, and we only tipped 10%. The waitress was not good - and to use the excuse that they are busy- didn't work for us, it was 2pm on a Friday. Get better servers!

    Great options for Veggies!

I visited Cafe Bari on a visit to NYC in January. After a long search for decent vegetarian options near my midtown hotel, and living off of Starbucks for the past two days, myself and a friend ended up here for dinner by chance on our way back from shopping. I was very impressed with the options available to me- the menu offers two add on options for many of the meals- one vegetarian, one not. I had a great salad with red wine marinated pears and avocado as the vegetarian add on. It was one of the best salads I have had at a restaurant and only $13. My friend had the Penne with a vodka sauce which was also very good. Serving sizes for both were well worth the price, though not too large. I was very filled by the salad. For dessert, we split a Creme Brulee which was exquisite, and nicely presented on a larger plate drizzled with chocolate. The atmosphere was very nice and trendy- only disrupted by a noisy family at the next table- this is NOT a kid friendly atmosphere. The crowd catered to is more of a small, trendy group, not a family dinner. Though the staff were accommodating to the loud children, I would have rathered that they had not set me so near them and I would have requested moving upstairs had I been aware of the seating there. I think I would enjoy it much more going back with no children in sight. In all, I really enjoyed my experience there and staff cannot control the obnoxious people who may choose to bring children that will not stay seated. I have marinated my own pears and I am attempting to re the salad tomorrow night.

    Mediocre and Overpriced

This was very disappointing. I had a tuna and mozzeralla wrap which was utterly tasteless for $13.95. My friend had a dried out chicken wrap for $14.95. There's a convienience store a few doors down that makes a far better wrap. They make up for poor quality with large portions. This place is obviously not relying on repeat customers and is simply taking advantage of the tourists who don't know that you can get great food at reasonable prices in NY.
