    Wonderful Eating Experience

Ate at Bar Americain with 3 girlfriends on a trip to NYC. We loved our meal! Highly recommend the blue cheese sauce served with hot potato chips. It was delicious. The skate with the crispy hominy was one of my favorite meals in NYC. Our waiter and servers were so nice and attentive. (Could it be that we were 4 girls from Arkansas with an accent?) To top off the meal, we saw Bobby Flay. He was extremely nice to us and allowed us to have our pictures made with him. We all like to cook and watch the food network and see his shows. That's why we like Bar Americain and Mesa Grill. We would love to eat here again!!

    My new favorite place!

I just ate at Bar Americain for the first time for lunch today. What a fabulous experience!! From the decor, to the service, to the fantastic meal and dessert, this place is top notch! I already love Mesa Grill, so now I can add this to my list of Manhattan favorites! I had the grilled shrimp salad (nicoise style) and shared the spiced fries with adobo mayonnaise (yum!) and a side of sauteed wild mushrooms and onions (done in a balsamic vinaigrette). All was fantastic! For dessert I had the chocolate apricot sunday that had dark chocolate ice cream (the best possible!) with both fresh and dried apricots and cubes of some kind of plaine cake all layered in a tall parfait glass. It all had a slight flavor of liquer to it with all the flavors blending wonderfully and the chocolate ice cream melting into everything. What a treat!! Not to sweet and truly wonderful. Mmmm... Can't wait to go back! :-)

    Would go again

I went to Bar Americain after New York Magazine awarded the Kentucky Hot Brown as Best Sandwich in 2006. While the sandwich definitely did not disappoint (for those who don't know, it's an open-faced turkey sandwich covered with Mornay sauce, a thick slice of tomato and two strips of bacon), the appetizers were way too salty - especially the Vidalia Onion Soup. You'd think that the soup would be slightly sweet with Vidalia onions, but there were so few onions and so much grated cheese that it was quite the opposite. The crouton was also so thick that it pretty much sucked up all the soup, leaving behind a soggy, salty glob. Overall, I've been disappointed with Bobby Flay's other restaurants, but I'm willing to give this one another try.

    Great Atmosphere and Service

Went for dinner wit hout of town friends. We had theatre tickets and were conscious of that fact and accommodated us very well. The food was very very good. I think what people don't always understand is that spicy dishes are made for the general pop. I love very spicy food but it's all americanized to be rather bland. I accept this. Our waitress was above and beyond one of the best I've ever had and gave great recommendations. The chocolate dessert was heaven

    Lousy Lunch

What a disappointment this restaurant was. Very mediocre food. My appetizer of Spicy Tuna Tartatre was not spicy at all and rather bland. my entree oF shrimp and grits was a chewy mess of flavors. Avoid.

    great dinner!

I live in the city and took my father here for a meal. We enjoyed a long dinner (over 2 hours) with all courses and were allowed to enjoy our meal without feeling rushed and with just the right amount of input from the waiter. Our apps were amazing -- the chicory salad and shrimp tasting plate. For our main course, we had the chicken gumbo and the filet. We also shared the potato chips with blue cheese, which were really great. However, the desert my personal favorite -- the blackberry souffle! We do not normally eat this much in one meal, but I must say it was fantastic! The atmosphere itself is a combination of tourist and city people, but the decor is open and inventive. I would recommend this place to both visitors and locals as a guaranteed good meal for the varied menu and great service! Downfall, the large meal was a bit pricey in the end, but it comes with eating big in the city.
