    Great time

Food was wondeful - shellfish platter was a great experience- a plethora of fresh fish, great chips w/ blue cheese sauce, loved the chickory salad, crab cake was extremely tasty, hams were great too. loved the gooseberry cocktail!! service as very good too- a very busy packed house and still made tiem for my table yes it is expensive- but so are other trendy NY restaurants...this one is no more so... a great time- looking forward to my return.

    No thanks

We wouldn't go back. Loud, food not that great. Overpriced for the quality. Seating is tight. Don't waste your time!

    Just a Name!

This was my first Bobby Flay experience. I have to say that i was very dissappointed. I was so excited to eat here but when the meal was over i was so perturbed. One highlight was the oysters. The oysters were really good but then again they don't make the oysters. Complaints? Many. Unless you are rich and don't need a lot of food you should not eat here. All the bottles of wine and entrees were pricey. I don't mind the entrees being expensive and i did know this but the portions were ridiculous. We had scallops...$32 for 4 scallops. Are you kidding me? We also had the snapper. Very small piece. Smaller value.

    Good meal...

Very nice. Lives up to the hype (mostly...). The restaurant has clean, modern decor and it's nice to be able to look into the kitchen and see Bobby Flay personally overseeing the kitchen. The service is good. Our table ordered crabcakes and oysters for appetizers and some steaks and the duck for entrees. The oysters and crabcakes were extremely good. The duck was spectacular. The steaks were competently prepared, but nowhere near the best in the city.

    A Gem!

We come in to the city about twice a month and always try to dine in one of the better places. Bar American has always been outstanding. Again on 2/3 it was wonderful. From the time we walked in until the time we left everything was perfect. There were 5 of us this time and we all enjoyed our dinners. We are planning to dine here again in 2 weeks.

    Enjoyable experience

Had dinner there on 2/1. I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the iffy past reviews. I eat out often in some of the best NYC restaurants and I think Bar Americain is worth every cent. We were seated immediately for our 6:00 reservation. The mushroom/goat cheese salad was outrageous and the crab cake got a thumbs up too. We both had the duck, which offers both the breast and leg, and we thought the flavors were rich and delicous. We each ordered our own sides (kale and spinach) and neither of us could finish them. Desserts were attractively presented, but just ok. Our waiter was pleasant, attentive and informative. Maybe some of the past negative comments were read by management because everything was perfect last night.

    Bobby's Beautiful Bar Americain

My friend and I went for dinner on 1/28/05 after seeing a Matinee so we had a 5:30 reservation which is quite early and we arrived even earlier than expected. The staff at the front of the house were very nice and told us service didn't begin until 5:00 and offered a drink at the bar which we took them up on. The cosmos were excellent. I have to comment on the restaurant itself. What a gorgeous venue and for a big room, I was surprised at the warmth of it. At 5:00 we were told by the hostess that we could be seated when we were ready, giving us the option to finish our drinks. Our waiter was as nice and attentive as can be. We both had a glass of red with dinner. I ordered the crab cake appetizer and the rack of pork, both were good, I wouldn't say great. My friend had the crab cocktail and the salmon. The cocktail was the lone disappointment in that it was inundated with cilantro, an herb that I don't dislike, but there was just way too much of it. The salmon was marvelous. We split the creme brulee and I have to admit that I an a CB snob. It was good. The crust wasn't as crusty as I like and the temperature to me was a little chilly, but the taste was amazing. The cappuchino was perfect. All and all, a great dining experience. We were never rushed. The prices aren't cheap, but I've seen worse for less. I would go again; maybe for lunch.
