    Poorest Service in NYC

I almost never feel the urge to post a review of a restaurant. However, the service and caliber of food at Banjara was so atrocious that I believe it would be a profound disservice not to warn other New Yorkers (and people with tastebuds) who might decide to waste their hard earned money at this establishment. The food was saturated in oil, and the "vegetable curry" contained only two vegetables! Moreover, the waitstaff was inattentive, bordering on incompetent. Of course, if it is, in fact, the management's fault that the waitstaff is overburdened, I am sympathetic. Seriously, though, go elsewhere.

    Delicious

The vegetarian dishes and murg tandoor are amazingly delicious. The raita is SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. The only thing I didn't enjoy was that there were only 4 people in the restaurant and they sat us all next to eatch other which was kind of awkward. Also I ordered the poori, but they didnt have it? All in all Banjara has excellent indian food. I would go back again.

    Something different on Indian Row

The joke is that all the restaurants on 6th street get the food they serve off a big conveyor belt that runs in a back alley and I honestly never care which one I stop into because the food is always the same. Banjara is one of the few that offers a different menu. The Saag Paneer was amazing if you go for a creamy paneer with great cheese and plenty of it. Other dishes looked great as they passed our table, but it's true that some of the fancier meat dishes had a nice presentation, but were small portions and smothered in sauce. All good, but i think if i were expecting a larger portion i'd be disappointed for the price. On the other hand, the large plate and nicely served small portion is kind of standard fare at many restaurants. The atmosphere is very nice and clean, and as many others here write, the service leans toward being lame. Some of the waiters are space heads....hard to tell if they think it's best to wait to be called to the table or if this is just bad service. We did ask for additional papadam and they forgot and we asked two more times before getting it. I realized at the end of our meal that the guy had our check all ready, but he was just really far away from our table and keeping his eye out for me to signal to him to bring it on over. Meanwhile, we sat there for quite some time with all dishes cleared just kind of waiting for him to come a bit closer or to simply ask us if we were ready...i think it was pretty obvious that we were. also, if your going to hire guys straight off the boat, make sure they understand basic english. i kind of expect to able to communicate in full sentences to the assistant wait staff and not have them look at me with blank stares.

Good food. Terrible take out order service

Good food. Awful delivery, They have 2 phone lines. They put me on hold on one and never came back so when I called it rang busy forever until I finally walked over 10 blocks to place my order for take out. The other phone line they never picked up when it rang which begs the question, why have 2 phone lines on the take out menu if you leave one off the hook and you don't answer the other. Oh, and another time they answered on a Saturday and because they could not hear because of the noise in the restaurant rather than taking the cordless phone outside so they could hear me they hung up on me. If you make it past this obstacle course, the food is good.

Please Bring Back Your Original Samosa.

I've been to Banjara since it's inception. I remember coming in and ordering the samosa and marveled at it's incredible size. It was slightly larger than a standard size, but what stood out was the delectable, crispy corners of the pastry. I went in yesterday and I knew that it was not going to be the same samosa I had ordered when I first came in 2000. Yes, change is inevitable, but for some reason my order looked like it came straight off a supermarket-shelf: quickly packaged and microwaved. It was also overly fried and oily too. Since when are samosas supposed to be that oily? In fact, it resembled close to a Thai variety dish of spring rolls. I was sorely disappointed. However, everything else was fine, but appetizers are important dishes too, especially samosas. I am better off ordering a batch from the local Indian grocer nearby. I apologized to my guest who didn't know any better but I am sure many of their customers do. Please, please bring back your original version of what a samosa should look like-I believe you are well aware of what I am talking about.

Great food, but service falls apart when it's busy

The food here is excellent. The service is generally good too, except when it's busy- then everything starts to fall apart. I think it's probably a matter of poor management/organization. The atmosphere here is very nice- cute decor, etc.- if you go when it's not packed. I have always loved this restaurant, but I went here last Valentine's Day and it was crazy- people standing around waiting everywhere for tables, stressed-out waiters and poor service. It's a great place and I love the food, but I would not recommend going here on a weekend or holiday because the staff really just can't handle it when it's busy.

    Good Food - Bad Delivery

I'm like a sucker for this place. I really like the food when I eat in. Its delicious, fresh, appropriately spiced and inventive. I must have ordered from there 20 times and EVERY time the food takes more than an hour to arrive and is lukewarm at best. Tonight it was 1hr 20 minutes. The woman who answers the phone - i think she's the owner - always says that they deliveryman "just left". I would rate this place so much higher if they could just hire a few extra delivery people and save us all the frustration.
