    Another great meal

We booked a table for a special meal and were not disappointed. As always, the service was excellent and the food was delicious. The atmosphere remains perfectly Parisian (except the friendliness of the service!). Meat is their specialty and it was up to their usual standard. The servings are large - neither my husband nor I was able to finish ours. The goat cheese tart was light and fluffy. The french fries are crisp and flavorful, and the spinach luscious. The after-dinner list of spirits is first rate I had an excellent madeira at a reasonable price. The place is always hopping, making the large room noisy but full of energy.

    Atmosphere + Food + Service

On vacation from New Zealand, my brother and I came to Balthazar on his proviso, and was not at all dissapointed. First were aware there would be some waiting time, but what the hey! 20 minutes at the bar was long enough for a beer and listen to some girls at a nearby table talking absolute nonsense. Then to our table. Tiny. Squeezed in between another traveller on his THIRD platter of oysters, and a plain looking couple bitching about who pays most of the mortgage. Who cares, we're in New York! Atmosphere was a-buzzin', waitress vivacious, helpful and foxy. Bro had a big piece of cow. I had the skate wing with capers and long beans. Delicious! Wines outrageous on the senses, then cognac until slightly slurring of the words. Waitress now looked even foxier. Everytime we passed the place it was always full. The reason? Book a table at Balthazar and find out!!

    disappointed, will NEVER came back

The biggest disappointment I've had during my 6 months in NY. First food: really nothing special, duck was dry and already coldish. French fries.. better go to McDonalds. Service: 3 waiters were serving us and they were totally confused, we had to wait so long for everything, even the water. I just wanted to leave ASAP. There are hundreds of better places to eat and enjoy in Manhattan.

    Among the best of NYC

The food, atmosphere and service were all excellent. I would agree with the previous reviewer that the atmosphere, while loud, makes it what it is and is part of the charm. Undoubtedly the best steak frites in NYC, exceptional ravioli, very fresh fish and great bread with proper butter! Our waitress could not have been more attentive or pleasant. The dessert (warm chocolate cake) was also delicious!

    Always a great meal

Felt obligated to write this review after reading some of the more recent ones. We have eaten at Balthazar many, many times, for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and late dinner after theatre. Although it can be noisy and very crowded, it is part of what makes this place. If you want to have a meal in a romantic or quiet setting, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a consistently great nyc meal with knowledgeable service, then stop by. Yes, it is quite expensive, but I have never had anything but excellent, fresh seafood from the raw bar, impeccably prepared egg dishes for breakfast and lunch, and their saturday short rib special is the definition of comfort food. Add that to staff that are efficient, courteous and very well schooled on wine pairings and you get a pleasant experience every time!

    very disappointed

i was looking forward to this dinner for months, yet after ordering a $360, 3 course meal with my out of town parents, i was full of regret. the waitress was mediocre with an attitude, the steak tartar was the worst i have ever had, and after ordering the most expensive entree on the menu, i recieved a steak au poivre that i didn't even finish. desserts were solid, not great. espresso was the best i've ever had. escargot was pretty good too. however my mother's entree was inedible, but she didn't tell anyone until it was too late. i tried it (duck) and it was not good. i am a waiter and bartender in manhattan and eat out quite a bit. if this place was half as pricey i would have been disappointed. maybe i just got unlucky, but fair warning, balthazars is not immune to providing an unpleasant experience on a friday night. i wont be going back, regretably.

    Crowded but good

I went here for a Sunday brunch. I had heard the wait to get seated could be a few hours, so I was pleasantly surprised when they told us only 45 minutes. Once seated I was a bit shocked how close the tables are. I felt like I was eating at the same table with the people around me, but their conversations were funny so it made up for this. Balthazar - here is a tip: please windex the mirrors on the wall, they are filthy. If you have ever been to the cheesecake factory, you will see they copied their layout after this place. The service was good. The food came very fast. The french toast, and the pancakes were excellent. Unfortunately, since it was Sunday at 11AM, we could not order drinks, so keep that in mind if you go on a Sunday. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised.
