    Try the seafood!

    I have always loved Balthazar's bread -- superb! But I tried that "Le Grand" which is the two-tiered seafood platter. There was plenty for two people. We had raw clams and oysters, cooked mussels and shrimp and this cilantro-lime squid/octupus salad, snails, conch and other things I can't remember. It was soo good. I was very pleased with the quality of the seafood (though the shrimp was overcooked). To note: always make a reservation. If you can't, be flexible -- 1 hour wait is standard there.

    Eh, but really depends

    if you like loud crowded places, great martinis, go for it. for dinner esp, make reservations if you expect a decent table without a 2 hr wait. only certain entrees really live up to expectations, the steak being one of them. the duck confit and the skate were mediocre, but a disappointment for balthazar. good seafood ceviche, though. NOT the place for a nice romantic date, but works for a fun night out. bread is great. the butter is fantasatic. i love french butter, or whatever type of butter they used.

    My new favorite!

    Recently spent a week in the city..Went to many fine restaurants...Balthazar was my favorite...What a charming and delicious little Brasserie! Yes, it is loud and tables are close together, but everyone is so happy with the meal that they are quite friendly! Love this place...I felt like I was in Paris..Best steak I have ever had, and pomme frites were perfect..Wine list is superb..Service was attentive but not overly obtrusive...Get reservations...Very popular, and that's not surprising...This is one great place for dinner! Make an evening out of it!

    Chic french

    I've gone for brunch, lunch, and a late 3 am dining, and all three of the times has been amazing. brunch is the best, i highly recomend the apple pancakes! you feel like you are in a classic french bistro, so adorable.

    Mmmmm...oysters

    Balthazar is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. I love the raw selections and not to mention their brunch. Their bloody mary's are especially magical for that sunday morning buzz.

    Birthday dinner

    I took my wife here for her bithday dinner on 1/20/06. We had to wait 25-30 minutes past our reservation time at a beyond packed bar for our table. Too many people were eating at the bar making ording a drink near impossible. It was extremely loud, however we scored the best table in the corner enclave and it was much quieter. To start we had the raw bar and and frites and a couple of martinis each. We were not rushed at all, they gave us plenty of time between martinis and courses. For dinner I ordered the cod or some other fish I can't remember in a parsley sauce, my wife ordered the risotto, which she gets points for an italian dish in a french restaurant. The parsley sauce looked radioactive and tasted like it. After one bite from each of us it was not touched. I split the risotto with her and it was ok not great as expected. I would recommend expecting a wait before dinner and ordering all the raw bar you can eat, and maybe the steak. Do not pass on an after dinner drink the selections are amazing and not over priced.

    Wonderful brunch

    My husband I took his parents here for Sunday brunch, and it exceeded all expectations. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. The atmosphere was fabulous, and it was a great spot to people-watch. The brioche French toast was perfect: crisp on the outside, moist and melting on the inside. Even the fruit salad was great. My husband loved his bar steak, and his parents were thrilled with their meals too. I can't wait to go back for dinner. It's a perfect place to take out-of-town guests.
