Wildly hit or miss Indonesian
I love Indonesian food. I'm actually married to an Indonesian woman. I have eaten here three times. Two of the meals have been awful. Try Borobudur instead or the amazing Upi Jaya out in Elmhurst, Queens.

An Amazing Find!
Absolutely my favorite spot for dinner. Whether it's a Monday evening, or Saturday night, the food is consistently excellent. Some of the best Satay I have ever had. Do try the Red Snapper in Chili Sauce- it's amazing! The food is very authentic, freshly prepared, and the staff is attentive, polite, and kind. Definitely a mid-town superstar! Excellent value as well.

Truly fantastic food
They have a daily special, with veggie and non-veggie options, which includes a glass of wine/beer/soda and dessert/appetizer. Incredible value, and every morsel was delicious.

Authentic food
My family is indonesian and I grew up in Holland eating this daily. When I come from boston on the bus, I always stop and eat at this restaurant. It's as close I can get to eating Indonesian food over here in the states.

Comfort food
Many of the staff of Nusantara, which closed its East 44th Street doors in 1995 (I still have a souvenir menu from one of my last visits there -- in its last month, I brought six crowds of friends), are on the staff of Bali Nusa Indah ("the beautiful island of Bali"). The cuisine is always consistently excellent, whether as takeout at lunchtime or as dinner before a long commute home.

Fairly authentic
Having grown up on this food (my mother grew up in the Dutch East Indies), this is the place I go when I want a taste of home (and don't feel like cooking it myself!). I recommend Bali Nusa Indah quite highly, and take friends there all the time to introduce them to the cuisine. So far, I've had nothing but raves from all of them!

Don't judge this book by its cover!
BALI NUSA INDAH used to be over on the east side, near the UN, and was a fairly pricey, upscale restaurant, one I enjoyed immensely. Its new digs are humble and there's nothing about the sign or the window that would lure a customer inside: it looks shopworn & down at heel. But the food is consistently good, fresh, generous, well prepared and presented with much graciousness and style (even if the service can be a little casual). I haven't found a better Indonesian restaurant in the city. (Note: The wine list is ordinary, but beer goes better with Indonesian food anyway.)
