So nice... a bargain
I actually desided to visit AUGUST because it's my sons name. It turned out to the perfect night. Good friends, excellent food and perfect service.

Tranquil Old World Feel
Cozy European atmosphere with views of wood burning ovens greeted us as we entered. Detail was given to design inside as well as out in the lovely glass enclosed garden dining area, complete with cobblestone flooring and plants above. We dined during the Sunday brunch and enjoyed it so much, returned for the evening meal. Friendly New Yorkers is so often an oxymoron, but not here. We were greeted and attended to immediately. Smooth lattes, smoky flavored bacon under the cr?me fraiche eggs, and oven toasted bread were heavenly. Our evening meal yielded some unique and delightful appetizers paired with complementary wines. Our lamb was the best I have ever eaten, and the sea bass was enhanced by the artichokes. We split a Vahlrona chocolate pot de cr?me that left a lingering flavor of chocolate delight on our tongue. (I was not too crazy about the vegetable with tripe - but that is a personal taste.) The salad with leeks had a mouth watering balsamic vinaigrette. The wine list is carefully paired to complete each selection, indicating quality, not quantity. We look forward to our next trip to NYC and dining in August.

Among the city's best brunches
Gorgeous space, exceptional food (best bacon I've ever had by a long shot). Service was great/friendly. Can't think of a more enjoyable brunch.

A real treat -
I've been meaning to go for a while and it was so worth the walk. We stumbled in on Friday at 8pm and got a table straight away! There were about 3 other tables empty. The wine list was good, not too daunting and not too expensive. I settled upon one of the cheapest Italian wines at $28, cheaper than anything by the glass and very pleasant. The apps were wonderful, gnocci was a big hit with me and the onion tarte was equally scrummy. My wife went for the whole orata fish and I had the skate, she got the best deal, the fish being perfectly cooked and plenty for one. My skate was a real let down, small in portion and not so flavourful, many EV spots beat it for less. The sides of cauliflower and sprouts were nice but expensive, the fries were boring and from a bag (I'd expected better). I'd say overall it was a good meal and even though we avoided the sweets they looked wonderful - especially the profitter rolls. The staff were friendly and efficient. Best meal since Porcupine.

Great food, poor service
I had the opportunity to join friends for brunch at this west village restaurant - with mixed results. The host was a most helpful and welcoming gentleman - we dined in the enclosed garden and all our food was tasty and creative - the damper on the experience was our waitress - service was slow and she was sullen and rude - making many mistakes all unapologetically. Based on previous reviews we were surprised by her attitude. Still we would go back and hope for a better personality.

So delish!
My first impression was that the dining room is a clever design. Great use of space in the west village. An alcove for waiting out of the way with a glass of wine. My friends took me for my birthday and we were led back into the glass ceilinged dining room and met by a very knowledgable and upbeat waitperson. The special was just that, special. Simple buttery noodles with cheese and freshly shaved black truffles. Amazing! Croquettas and riceballs are perfectly small so as not to spoil the entrees. Pot au feu was clean and tender, the milk, braised pork was also moist to perfection. 2 fish dishes, the whole fish and the skate were also clean, and perfect in flavor. The influences of eastern europe, southern italy and french techniques put together by a hawaiian(!) chef are exquisite. If you appreciate emotional, detailed food please do go!

High hopes were not met
I was looking forward to my visit to August since it garnered pretty good reviews here and on Manhattan chowhounds, but I was disappointed with the result. The ambiance and staff are lovely. The seating can be a bit uncomfortable, but that is to be expected in a small place. My appetizer was good, but not exceptional (I don't even remember what it was - something with bread and ham). My entree which was a gnocci dish had so much salt on it that it was inedible. The waitrss was so busy that by the time she came over to check on us, my date had finished her meal. I am not going to rush back. The entrees were a bit expensive for what they were...
