I was in NYC for 9 days and my friend who I went with was working for four of these. On the first day of us renting accomodation and my friend dashing off to work I were unsure where to go for breakfast. I planned to go 5th avenue shopping on my own so got off at 6th to find somewhere for breakfast first. It felt like a bit of an adventure with hunger pangs growing by the minute and myself alone in a big city, but arriving at the Astro I immediately felt at home and was looked after by the staff. I liked the bar that you sit up at, as thought that was a good way to meet Americans. Sure enough I met a lovely Californian couple. I ate a hearty breakfast and was soon on my way to the shops, proud of myself for finding a cafe that I could just go to for breakfast at a reasonable price where staff where friendly. I was impressed with the choices too. Will definately visit when I go back to New York one day. I say 'when' rather than 'if' as I fell in love with the city and if shopping at 5th avenue for the day, then eating first at Astro is a 'must'!

I really wanted to like this place as it's a favorite among my colleagues. However, I waited fifteen minutes at the counter for a tuna melt takeout, and then five minutes later when I opened it at my desk, the tuna was cold, and the cheese unmelted. The tuna also had an unappetizing taste. Ended up throwing it out and having to order another lunch - from somewhere else. Haven't yet been tempted to try it again, but my co-workers have apparently had better luck with their orders.

The food was excellent. Ingredients were fresh and delicious. Our waitress was very friendly. We were seated right away. The only problem we had was it took a little long to get a refill on our drinks when the restaurant was only 1/2 full. Other than that small thing it was a perfect dining experience ;)

We stayed at the Hilton and ate at Astro's whenever we could. It was close to the hotel, the food was good, and the prices were much more reasonable than many other places. Astro reminds me of a small town cafe where the wait staff is friendly, the service is prompt, and the servings generous. Of the food we ate the Astro burger (undercooked but recooked perfectly with no argument), fries, gyro sandwich, buckwheat pancakes, breakfast sausage (HUGE links), rye toast (thick slices with a mild flavor), over easy eggs (cooked to perfection), and home fries were excellent. The vegetarian eggplant with rice and the vegetable frittata were just okay. I would go back again and recommend it as a place to try.

Breakfast is terrific and reasonably priced. Lunch and dinner are expensive for what they are (solid diner food), but its a nice place. I go all the time for breakfast. Lunch grilled ham and cheese is 8 dollars however! Yikes.

I worked across the street for eight years.Once a week, thirty of us would get the bacon cheeseburger. It was great every time...The fries are pretty good too........
