best falafel
I live on the upper east side and I routinely come down to Ashkara to get my falafel fix. The falafel is better than any ive had in the ues. I really come down to get one almost once a week.

A word I never say: "ugh"
Before we went to a few bars we were hungry so we stopped into Ashkara for a quick bite because it was close by. The only thing I'd recommend is the fresh pita plain. Everything else tastes like the middle eastern condiments you get from cans or jars. The falafel was hard outside and not fully cooked inside- mushy. Their hummus isnt flavorful at all, I like the Sabra brand stuff I buy at the grocery better and that stuff isnt even that good, just a stretch when you can't get to a middle eastern place.t. The fries weren't fried enough.

Fresh and Excellent
I live nearby and I can't believe that I did not think this place was good. I was craving a falafel and fries and caved and ordered in. I got the plate which came with salad, falafel, marinated carrots, tahini and a huge side of the best fries with dipping sauce. The pitas were insane. This could easily serve 2 people. It took me 3 times to finish this meal. I had it for dinner, then 2 lunches the next day. On top of it, comes with fresh lemonade. The guy on the phone is cold but who cares. lol

Excellent
I visited this place after a late night and could not believe there was a kosher place at Houston and 1st... The food was perfect and the service was friendly. Good but limited selection of israeli type food. Great place...

stands the test of time
i have to say that for years i wasn't touching falafel in the city since the close of pita power on bedford ave. while at the mercury lounge one night i tried out the falafel at ashkara, avoiding it prior because it looks way too clean for a falafel place. after the first bite i instantly ordered a bag of pitas to take home with me. these are, without a doubt, the best pitas i've ever had. i can get an entire order of belgian fries and a lemonade with my falafel at ashkara, and i won't have to worry about making it there until it's approaching 5 am. what really sold me, however, was that i got my falafel at 8 pm and wasn't able to eat it until 11 pm. my ashkara falafel was as though it was just ordered moments before. the wrapping job was so impeccible that even the fluid hot sauces remained in the order in which i applied them to my sandwich! all this for UNDER $5. ashkara is the permanent home for my falafel craving.

Crunchy Falafel's are not good
I got a falafel at this place today and it was painfully crunchy. The service was pretty disappointing as well because the person who took my order just mumbeled half the time and I couldn't understand what he was saying.

Great great grrrreeeeat!!
The falafel is addicting...I go back once a week minimum. The fact they are Kosher is awesome too, as my roommate is kosher and I am vegetarian. It works on many levels...Plus, its reasonably priced for the city.
