    Mmm...cheese

Went there last night with a friend. Had a 6:30 reservation and they sat us down earlier which was nice. French onion soup was sooooo good, with three kinds of onions and 3 kinds of cheese. Fondue was yummy though I wish it came with more than bread, all other items you would have to pay extra for. Service was fine, nothing horrible about it. Would definitly go back again and try some of the entrees this time because they looked wonderful.

    Not just wine and cheese

If you love wine and cheese, this is the place to go. I have never had a problem with the service as people have complained about, and I have been there 4 times. This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC (I've been to many of the "top rated" restaurants) and I return as often as possible. Also try their sister restaurant, Picholine.

I'll go back again and again

I read a couple of these reviews and wasn't sure if I really wanted to go to Artisanal. My friend encouraged me to go because she had a great experience so she talked me into it (and I really wanted fondue anyway). Sure, the service isn't the fastest in NY, but our waiter was knowledgeable, and not at all snooty. He was friendly and helpful. The food is delicious. I highly recommend the cheese souflee basket (so good!) and the platter of cheese, meat, and fruit, which is actually just an appetizer, but very filling. The chocolate fondue for dessert is also really good. I didn't get a chance to have some wine because I had a dirty martini (which was also really good) but there was an impressive list. I will recommend it!

    What happened?

Unfortunately, Artisanal probably will not get our restaurant business again. Our first visit was lovely, delicious food, proactive and helpful staff. We tempted fate and visited again...with friends...and what a disappointing change. The wait staff was surly and the quality of all but the cheese had undergone a subtle downgrade. I will always go to purchase cheese but not likely to visit again as a restaurant...so sorry.

    Service needs help

The cheese selection is wonderful. So is the amazing wine list with all offered by the glass. The food is usually pretty good. The service... is not good. Of course, I've only gone for dinner. Maybe the service is better during lunch.

    Used to be better

The food is great here, but we've encountered poor service the last few times. We recently had a reservation for three on a Sunday night at 8 pm. We weren't seated until 9:15, were promised complimentary drinks and appetizers for which we were subsequently charged, and were served the incorrect entrees. The place was louder than a carnival, and we were glad to leave at the end of the night.

Awesome food and underrated wine menu

The food here is always great - plenty of comfort food (the fish 'n chips are fantastic) but paired with more interesting stuff as well (rabbit au Riesling anyone?). And of course everyone knows that the cheese selection is world-class, and the raison d'etre for Artisanal. However, few people realize -- their wine menu is one of the best I've ever seen. They offer literally hundreds of wines by the glass which makes it incredibly fun to go there with a group and try out a bunch of stuff. For anyone into food, Artisanal is a must!
