Great food and a fun evening

Had dinner here last evening with friends. We were very impressed with our meal... the service was exceptional, the host (whose name I think was Michael) was very very attentive.. We had a bevy of wonderful "firsts" and definately is on our "must do again" list. Great Onion soup....

    It gives great fondue

The place smells like france and switzerland (i have lived in both). bistroish but get their fondue blend, perfect for everyone, get the beef tips Attentive but slow waitstaff. Fondue best value. Takeout cheese selection not cheap but very good. Wine- cab blend, a must is Exlibris best value. I'm extremely jaded, but this is a great place.

    Pretty good...

My wife and I went on a Friday night at 8:00. The crowd appeared to be largely yuppie twenty-somethings. I agree that the place is quite loud, but no worse than some other large, popular NYC restaurants at which I've dined. Likewise, the service was not nearly as dismal as described here by some other reviewers-nothing special but not completely inattentive either. It's not meant to be fine dining, but casual French bistro fare/atmosphere and at that it succeeds. As or the food, it was excellent . The gougeres were tasty, if overhyped. The onion soup was excellent, rich and hearty with a perfectly browned crust of cheese on top. I had the hanger steak frites as an entree. The steak was a perfect medium rare, tender and juicy, and the frites were crisp without being overdone . My wife had the trout amandine with haricots verts, which was also very tasty. For dessert we had the cheesecake with pecans and caramel , and that too was excellent. All in all, the food was excellent, and I would have no qualms about going back. I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic dinner or a truly special occasion, but for a casual night out with the wife it was pretty good.

    Wonderful food, poor service

The food is wonderful yet the service needs adjustment. The first discourteous act occured when I was booking my reservation with a impolite Reservationists. She was sassy as well as failed to communicate their large party policies clearly and rudely explained the policy after having to waive it when my husband who is a regular lunch customer called to confirm the reservation. The hanger steak was GREAT! The Fondue was SPECTACULAR! Wine was exceptionally flavorsome although the hostess was stand offish I enjoyed my meal and my waiter.

    Very Loud, inattentive waiter....

We arrived at 6:30, the restaurant was only half full and the noise level was already very, very loud. By the time we left, we had to all but shout to each other to have a conversation. The waiter approached us nicely, but it seemed that when we told him we were not buying any wine, his attitude immediately changed. He was very inattentive and we had to motion him to have him come to our table when we were ready to order, needed something, or wanted the check. The food was very good (great onion soup and osso bucco monkfish), but we didn't stay for dessert or coffee because we just wanted to leave. We were seated no more than 18 inches from the tables beside us so for us, it was like dining family style with your neighbors. I would not return or recommend this restaurant.

    Good Food

I went to Artisanal on Saturday night. The mushroom risotto was great. I was disappointed with cheese plate of six cheeses. The cheese cake dessert was fantastic. Great wine selection too.

    Rock and Roll

At least once a year, I want to go to a special restaurant for a deluxe treat. Artisanal has been that restaurant for years. I always look forward to the next time. Their classic cheese fondue is perfect and reasonably priced. Last time I drank some port with the fondue. I asked about the selection, and the sommelier brought over a small glass with a taste of a fine one. I was touched. They have always treated me with kindness and respect, and I have been more than happy with every waiter I ever had there. Some times they have sweetbreads as a special, and I have been lucky to have been there. The sweetbreads were excellent, delicate and not overcooked; so I hope to show up on that special day again. They have a beautiful cheese store by the wall that is very well stocked. I usually get some raw goat cheese to take home. Ask for the chocolate souffle. It's not on the menu anymore, and i miss it because it used to be a real treat. So if enough people ask for it, maybe they will serve it again. I give this restaurant my highest recommendation, you can?t go wrong.
