Food was great espcially for the area - unique! Of course, I would prefer if their prices were about 10-15% less. That would be a much better value. Also, the service was slow. It doesn't take long to make a sandwich but they sure took their time when I went.

I have been making a pet project to find the best pastrami sandwich in NY. I have my favorite, but since I live on the Upper West Side, I thought I would give Artie's a shot. It may have been one of the biggest disappointments of my pastrami-loving life. Thin, greasy, tasteless strips on stale rye bread in an atmosphere like Denny's on Liberace steroids. I figure they just rebooted a bunch of Boar's Head. On the upside, the service was great. And the bottled beer was good, too. If you don't mind paying out the nose.

We long ago gave up on delivery from Artie's since it took nearly an hour for them to deliver -- only two blocks away. So we started calling in an order, I'd run over and pick it up. Convenient! Except the order was never -- never never never -- complete. Every time, it seems, I'd pick up (and, of course, pay for) the order, only to get home and find something missing. A knish, or, tonight, a pastrami sandwich. Sure, I'd call in, tell them (they never question the call) that they forgot something, then I have to go back out and there it would be waiting for me (or I could wait, and make my family wait, another hour for them to deliver it), no problem. Never a challenge, you say we forgot it, sure, here it is. Frankly, it's happened so often, and the staff seems sooooo blase about it, that I have to begin to wonder whether it's really an accident at all. Call in, and sure, there's a pastrami sandwich waiting when you get back to the restaurant. But what if you're too tired to be bothered? Well, so you write it off to another NYC nuisance. Could they possibly be counting on that? The food at Artie's is good. The delivery is (or, at least when we gave up on it, was) awful. The take-out is soooo unreliable that, unless you're prepared to unwrap every sandwich and open every bag in the restaurant before you leave, I'd avoid it too. We're sure going to. It's just not worth the hassle. I've never had this problem this consistently with any other restaurant.

We ordered delivery from there tonight and it was honestly so bad we will probably never go there again. Their staff is unhelpful and the food took an hour to arrive. It arrived luke warm and a bit soggy. Our burger was undercooked and had no cheese or any of the toppings we ordered. We also ordered hot dogs which also came with no toppings. When I called to complain, I was told they would do nothing to fix this.

While some things here are mediocre (i.e. the potato pancake) , the brisket sandwich is always good and comforting. The matzo ball soup is a bit underseasoned for me, but ok...my husband loves the chopped liver and pastrami sandwich and the pickles. Don't bother with the knish puppy...not good. The service is always a bit slow and grumbly, but it is one of the few places that we can really get this kind of food on the UWS anymore!

After the theater my wife and I just wanted a snack. She had split pea soup and blintzers. Both very good. I had a huge whitefish platter with lots of lettuce, onions and tomatoes and a bagel. What a deal for $ 12.95. Our waitress was very polite and very prompt. We will definately go back there.

I loved Artie's when it first opened and I could rely on that place to give me that good taste of Jewish style cuisine. This time, after tasting it, it was clear that the herring that came out was a mixture of some that was a little "old" with some that was fresh. I sent it back, ordered another kind of fish, took the tomato garnish off the top of the whitefish and, AGAIN, a mixture of the old and new. I didn't have to taste it, I could SEE it. My waitress was patient and polite, but there are clearly some problems at Artie's these days.
