    X with the AMEX

Apparently, AOC management forgot they're in NYC. AFTER we finished eating, they happened to mention that they only take AMEX or cash. Something like this should be nicely mentioned BEFORE dinner, not after dinner. I had a feeling they were trying to shake me down. The staff also forgot that a tip should be earned by good service.

you can't judge a book by it's cover

On walking past, the tablecloths and candle light lends itself to chilled yet swanky establishment. Unfortunately the food and service are well below par. Avoid the escargot unless you like chewy, earthy snails. The entrecote did not do any better as it comes with a nice chunk of fat and my friend enjoyed some bits of plastic with the accompanying salad. The rather unapologetic waiter didn't help.

AOC has closed for an unknown reason...

Looks like AOC is closed - there are some signs up front including one from the city. Not sure what's happening but you can't even look in since it's all boarded up with paper.

    A special for X&W

Don't go to France, if you didn't like the "attitude" in AOC, how can you like us? It's about 60% french in this place, and the mexicans there fit perfectly, so it's basicaly all french (and not the preppy one you're used to see in most of the time). Do us all a favor, stop thinking you know when you don't. I brought tons of different people there the past 3 1/2 years, everybody likes it, you can hang out for hours at the bar, but it's not for needy and fragile people...

    You Won't Do Much Better

Professional, extremely welcoming, good value tasty cuisine and lively ambiance......what else is needed? Fortuneately, our 2 recent visits whilst staying with our son in The Village, coincided with splendid weather and we were able to eat in the garden area which was most refreshing. Very popular with locals which speaks volumes.

    Stunningly Mediocre - Stay away

I've traveled a lot in France and lived there for a while so was hopeful walking in to have a meal here with a friend. I wasn't expecting anything amazing - it's a diner after all. But I was stunned by it's mediocrity! Blasé + Bad - They still managed to screw up my order and the service was lethargic. I would not recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a decent meal - especially if you're with a friend since the bad uninspired food and service can erode the conversation and leave a permanent bad taste.

    Don't forget the butter!

I decided to take my friend here for her belated birthday dinner and was not disappointed. Make sure to bypass the tables in front & inside and head straight towards the back because the hidden outdoor garden makes for a great dining experience. The seating in the garden is limited but spacious enough to enjoy a delicious meal under the stars or a romantic dinner date. Aside from the quaint outdoor garden, the place is a typical French bistro and the food will definitely put a smile on your face if you enjoy French food. For appetizers, we ordered the escargots and foie gras. The escargots were tasty and very buttery. Much to our delight, it was so buttery that we used the table bread to soak up the excess. The foie gras was also tasty and included a tiny side salad with the order. Can't go wrong with escargots & foie gras for starters until you find out what it's really made from....ha! For entrees, I ordered the grilled lamb chops and my friend ordered the duck leg, sausage in bean stew. The lamb chops were delicious and grilled just like the way I ordered. Also, there were plenty of sauteed vegetables with the dish and my friend helped polish off the broccoli stalks (tops and bottoms!). My friend's dish was a large order and she managed to finish a little more than half her plate. The bean stew was very yummy with plenty of beans so make sure not to make any sudden moves. The duck meat combined with the sausage added a nice flavor to the dish. The meat was tender and cooked just right where it wasn't chewy or rubbery. We finished off a lot of food and didn't have room for desserts even though the dessert menu looked very tempting....*sigh*. When my friend excused herself to go to the bathroom, the waitress (who's French) came over and chatted for a bit. At times she might have been too friendly for my taste but it might have been a cultural thing. I didn't want my friend to get the wrong idea when she got back to the table so I decided to pick up the tab and leave. On the way out, I noticed that the restaurant had televisions inside that carried baseball games. One ball game wasn't too exciting except for the bunt single squeeze play that excited the crowd. Even though we missed out on desserts, there are plenty places in the neighborhood that serve great desserts. Eventually, we ended getting cream puffs in the area from the same place that my friend's brother (who's not her boyfriend) went the other night.
