overrated
I love checking out well reviewed resturants and I have heard nothing but good things about Anthos. So I reserved a table of 8 guests and we were set out to have the ultimate Anthos Experience. However, upon eating there we found out that we were not crazy about it some of the dishes were good the food is very fresh thats the only upside but the service was lousy and they overcharged us, also i believe the food was overrated. I brought in a cake because it was my boyfriends b-day and they charged me $80 just to cut the damn cake which in my mind is the most crazy thing I have ever heard considering I have eaten at some of NYC's best resturants I will never ever go back they just lost a great customer and a major foodie

Microscopic Amounts of Food
If you're hungry don't visit this restaurant! I had to get something to eat after I left. Haven't they heard about the economic crisis and the fact that customers want value for their money?

Smoked Octopus and Loup de Mer
Had lunch there yesterday for the first time. Simply said, one of the better meals midtown has to offer. Elegantly prepared food. The smoked octopus was one of the best appetizers I have ever tasted. Will definatley be back for the lamb burger.

Quite Good
I recently had some friends in town from CA and decided to take them here on a whim. My wife and I had dinner at Kefi recently and had a great experience, so we decided to go more upscale. They (Anthos) had introduced a more moderately priced 4-course tasting for $65, so we all decided to go that route. We were not disappointed. All of the food was delicious and inventive yet straightforward. The only complaint I had was that the potato soup shooter (a freebie) was a bit salty. But the rest of the food was really excellent. Lentil soup, smoked octopus, pasta with chicken liver, braised oxtail, lamb saddle... it was all perfectly balanced and more complex than I can describe here. The service is professional but friendly as well. In short, Anthos deserves the praise it has been getting. I will agree with a prior reviewer who said the place is somewhat lacking in atmostphere; however I think this is more a function of being in midtown on the weekend during these economic times. But I would heartily recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants great food.

Chic Greek
Before a show at Radio City, we were treated to a really fabulous dinner here. Anthos is owned, and its kitchen directed by a master! The most exciting, sophisticated treatment of Greek cuisine I have ever experienced - even in Greece! The food is elegant, delicious and generous. The wine list is diverse and nicely priced, and it includes some really nice indiginous variatals you have never tasted before. Service was attentive and professionally friendly. Love it and will absolutely go again.

Exciting food and atmosphere, service needs improvement
Had a Friday night 8pm reservation at Anthos with a good friend of mine. The restaurant was pretty much packed already - quite a scene! We were seated promptly at the upstairs section which is small and quiet. Ask for a downstairs table if you want to be in the scene. Our waiter was not good at all, after taking our drink orders, I had to ask 3 times for my drink which was finally brough over after our appetizers. For appetizer I had scallops which were very good, in a very light and refreshing sauce. My friend had a delightful salad. Part of the great experience here was the freebies - an excellent cauliflower soup served in shot glasses, and an array of small tapas including salmon, cheese, olives and a cheese/pepper dip. A very nice touch which you dont see often. For entree I had the tuna which was perfectly seared, though a small portion. The crust was light, and was accompanied by light sauce, sesame crackers, olives and a vegetable. My friend had the lamb shank which she absolutely loved and I think she would have licked the plate, but she is too well-mannered. Again, to reiterate the service, we had to refill our own water glasses unless the 2nd waiter was around, he was the only saving grace with service. Our main waiter did not ask how things were etc even once. When he brought the dessert menu, I knew what I wanted right away, but he handed me the menu, turned his heel and left. We had to call him back to take our order. I didnt see the waiter around nearby tables either, but did see him congregating with the hostesses to discuss something downstairs. Dessert was average, I had a chocolate peanut butter cake which was not enough chocolate and too much peanut butter. My friend had a delightful nutty torte with cranberries. The food was without a doubt unique, well prepared, and the attention to detail that is missing in alot of restaurants these days. But the service needs some upgrades especially considering this is a Michelin star rated establishment. A must try for the food though!

Imperious, officious hostess (general mgr)
A cardinal rule for any restaurant, particularly one that aspires to greatness, as does Anthos, is to welcome guests and treat them with respect. The hostess in the evening, who says she is the general manager of Anthos, was anything but. When I and several of our group of 6 arrived at 6 pm to claim our reservation made many weeks ago, we were told no table seating until the full party arrives. This is for a restaurant where the average check can total almost $100 a person. This rule, which applies at sister restaurant Keffi makes sense, as that is an informal, less expensive restaurant dependent on a fast turnover of tables. But it has no application at high-end restaurants. When I politely but firmly told the hostess that we wanted to be seated and that others would be arriving in the next 10 or so minutes, she refused. Then she decided to send us to a completely empty and gloomy upstairs table. I walked up the lonely stairs and saw that there wasn't even a table set for 6 persons. She said there were no tables for 6 in the main room. When I told her I saw two of them from the front, she claimed they were previously reserverd and she would have to find a different table and set it up downstairs. Finally, after a number of minutes of further waiting, I asked again to be seated (5 of our party of 6 were there), and she then led us to a table that had been set and ready 10 minutes earlier. The look of smugness and condenscension on her face said it all. Our waiter was superb and he tried his very best to overcome this very rough beginning. But no amount of fine service and tasty food can make up for the very bad taste left in my mouth by the officious hostess-general manager. A very unpleasant beginning marred what should have been a lovely evening.
