jerk chef
We were totally look forward to dinner here. They described a pasta dish with a clam sauce, fresh tom, and fresh made pasta. What we got was clearly not fresh and was a pesto sauce. We mentioned that the description was off but did not make a big stink about it. When we were done I asked for it to be wrapped up. When we got the check, the waitress sad she had taken the pasta of the check. Then the chef called the waitress over to the open kitchen and said something to her. She cam back and said that, we would either have to take the food out of the togo tin or pay for it. I've never been so insulted, we did not ask for free food, they took it of the check . . . I've been to culinary school and spent years working in restaurants. For someone to open a new restaurant in my hood, and pull that in the first week, well I think that says something about there character.

We all smelled like greasy fried food after leaving!
The food was good enough, but our clothes and our hair all smelled like a deep fryer after we left! Anella should invest in a better exhaust system...smelling like a grease truck sort of ruins the experience for me.

My Favorite in Greenpoint for Dinner
I've been here more than 3 times and each time it has been a great experience. The service is friendly and a bit more "grown-up" than other places in Greenpoint, and the food is just-right; moderately fancy but good portions. The appetizer-sized mussels are big enough for a meal. Pasta, fish, bruschetta...all good.

Service a step above
Anella fits somewhere between the former Queen's Hideaway and the other neighborhood usual suspects. It follows the local unspoken (tired?) urban-rustic-American design mandate, and has a hearty menu to match. But the Italian leanings are a welcome addition and new spin on that old fare. Classy pizzas are a bonus. The service and attention to detail are true stand outs, which is welcome in this Laissez-faire borough of food service. I had the salmon, cooked to perfection, crispy but mouth watering on the outside and not overdone throughout. The roasted vegetables were good, though they could have been dryer. Like the salmon, they may have used gills to swim through that oil. It's clear they're seeking perfection--to this, I'd recommend getting the salmon on a round plate, and separating it a bit from the vegetables, or centering, to highlight the main appeal of the dish. Instead, it was delivered on an oval dish, one mass of food--a fine plebian approach lest it not get too stuffy, but the presentation did not equal the tastes on the plate. They're just working out the kinks. Will definitely be back.

Exceeded Expectations
Had a completely first-class meal with great (perfectly timed) service at a surprisingly low price. Terrific bruschetta $6, incredible spaghetti & meatballs (also ordered at our table was the truffle-oil pizza which was maybe even better) for something like $12, and a rich and satisfying chocolate terrine for dessert ($6). They currently don't serve alcohol but when they do I have faith that they will stock nice booze. Total home run for all occasions. I never write reviews for this kind of thing but I really believe that the people who run this place deserve some props early on in their existence.
