Excellent food & service! A must!
Having dined at Amma several times, I find the food and service consistenly excellent. I've never had a disappointing meal there, and the chicken tikka masala is the best I've ever had. Amma's range of northern and southern Indian dishes is a pleasure to explore, and the staff is very accommodating. The service is always smooth, and the wine service is informed and comfortable. Highly recommended!

Not as great as advertised
I think the "fabulous place" reviews are a little misleading. While the decor and service are good the food is quite sub standard. I especially didn't like the paneer. I had expected a departure from the usual orange curries dished out all over Manhattan but was completely disappointed. Indian food is not about oddles of fat and butter and unidentifiable ingredients. There was so much butter in my paneer I could have smelt it from a mile. Their pretentious quantites are outrageous. Overall this place was a disappointment for me.

What's so great about this place?
Our food was mixed - my lamb rogan josh was good, but my wife's paneer makhani wasn't. We were aggressively marketed their kulfi trio (three different flavors of kulfis). The serving was so small that given a couple of minutes if the kulfi had melted we wouldn't have been able to see it! The decor is ordinary, but the service was friendly. Honestly I don't see what the fuss is about this place.

Expensive, Slightly Above Average Food
First the good: the service was polite and attentive. The ambience is unique as far as Indian establishments go and the seating comfortable. However, the quality of the food is lacking, only somewhat above average at most. The butter chicken, saag paneer and apricot lamb were nothing out of the ordinary. I was really expecting more out of the sauces/seasonings. Don't know why this place gets such laudatory comments, perhaps the superlative reviews were posted before Amma's "celebrity" chefs left to start their own joint. Furthermore, the prices are on the high side. In my humble opinion, Amma is not amongst the best Desi places in NYC, at least not anymore.

Great food - tiny portions and pricey
I am Indian and I have to say the north indian food (haven't tried the south indian) here is very good. The pre-fix lunch is the way to go. The Paneer is to die for! Portions are very small especially the dal (lentil) and Mushroom Appetizer as they hand you 3 tiny mushrooms on a plate. Common if you charge atleast be generous. Definitely worth a visit just cannot justify the prices as Indian food isn't that expensive.

Sooo Goood!
This restaurant was amazing! We got there an hour late for our reservation sat night and they still seated us immediately. My husband has certain food allergies, and even though we got the 7-course tasting menu, they were 100% accomodating and even substituted certain dishes for ones that he couldn't have. I'm indian and my husband is an indian-food enthusiast and we were both blown away by the food - TERRIFIC! Just beware, if you want the tasting menu, they encourage everyone in your party to get it b/c they serve the courses over almost 2 hours!
