Great Takeout
I just had take out from Ambers. The food was great. A little pricy but some of the best sushi take out I have ever had in NYC. I had the Lemon Grass Soup, Triple Toro roll and the Angry Lobster roll. All was wonderful. The take out supplies where the best I have ever been supplied with by ANY restaurant. WIll do again.

Fantastic value
Lunch special is the best deal in town, served elegantly on fancy plates like a $100 meal. The food is great, the portions are more than enough, little touches here and there with sauces. Nothing like you average greasy Chinese food. Dinner atmosphere is more like a lounge, so that's a winner.

subpar
Dining out is one of those things that's dictated by my mood as much the food. So a happy day for me means I can let subpar food go. But Amber was a notable exception. Service was so slow. The chairs were kind of uncomfortable for so long a wait. And there were eggshell bits in my pad thai which seems like the strongest sign of a lazy kitchen. Plus, it's just plain icky to feel shell grind into your teeth when the most crunch you're expecting is the sprouts.

No No No
The service took three hours and the food was subpar. Everyone is obnoxious. The food was old and expensive. Do not order the hamachi, it tastes like salami. Do not order the salmon, it tastes like old milk. Please do not go there. They hate atheists, please beware!

Frightening!
The calamari seemed frozen pre-packaged, the sushi rice seemed stale and yellow, the salad garnish was browning at the edges. The Asian chicken dish was a fried chicken cutlet with the store-bought Thai dipping sauce and some frozen corn thrown in. This was the worst meal I've had in ages and the price point suggested that the restaurant would use fresh, quality ingredients. Disappointing and quite frightening that it is still in business and people will tolerate such rubbish in NYC!

Subpar
I've just had one of the most disappointing dinners in quite awhile. All the rolls at Amber are poor for the singular reason that the seaweed used is awfully stale and rubbery. That makes for far-too-chewy rolls and an all around borderline texture. Sushi is a delicate food, and an error this fundamental throws everything off. I actually found myself spitting food out -- I can't remember the last time I've done this, especially with sushi. Perhaps I caught them on a bad night, but, honestly, it's not worth the risk, the trouble, or your hard-earned, rapidly-depreciating dollars to give this place a shot.

our favorite sushi place on the west side
My boyfriend and I are trying to go to every sushi place in manhattan, and this is our favorite besides nobu. The fish is fresh, delicious cuts, and I really love the ambience, though it can be loud at dinner rush. It's a bit pricey and we find we're often there a few hours, but that's okay.
