Noisy but food was very nice

I made a reservation about an hour before we were due and was surprised and delighted to find a table for 6 was availale for 6.15; we had theatre tickets for 8pm. Restaurant was busy and almost full when we arrived and thus was quite noisy. It is dimly lit so would be romantic if it wasn't busy and thus very noisy. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. Five of us ordered a pasta dish and one the sole; all delicious. I was told their portion sizes were suitable for 1 person when I was ordering my meal to share with my daughter and so we each ordered our own and yes they are exactly right for 1. Our Pasta dishes were all in the $15 range which I found to be normal for this type of restaurant. A short, easy walk to Winter Garden theatre so perfect for our needs. We were in and out of there in an hour but then we didn't have starters or desert.

    Our dinner at the Amarone

Hi, Last week-end , more precisely on Sunday April 12th 2009, we picked the Amarone for what was to be our "fancy" dinner of the week-end and we never regretted our choice . We had made a reservation by simply walking in at the end of the afternoon and were pleasantly greeted by a young lady who assured us that, although it couldn't be guaranteed, they would make an effort to save the table my wife had requested . When we walked in a few hours later, our table (the one my wife preferred) was ready . That was a good start .... And it kept getting better . Service was very friendly and efficient . We never felt rushed but the emptied plates were promptly disposed of and the tabled cleaned but most importantly, food was just great . The four of us picked different meals so we had a good opportunity to get a better opinion . The filet mignon was a nice portion, tender as required and the accompanying amarone sauce excellent . Quite the same can be said of the Scalloppine al Gorgonzola, the Filetto di Maiale . In short this was a very pleasant experience that we will be willing to relive anytime we are in NYC.

    Very Nice!

My boyfriend and I went to Amarone to celebrate our 7 year anniversary. We made reservations and got there an hour and a half late because of the traffic (and map quest lied about how long it would take to get there :-P) but they seated us right away even though it was busy. The atmosphere was romantic. The restaurant was dimly lit and there was light music playing. The staff was excellent and very attentive. The food was good. For appetizers, we got crab cakes and the special: mozzarella, tomato, basil and prosciutto. They were both good, but the prosciutto was great, it was the real stuff, real prosciutto di parma that melted in ur mouth and the mozzarella was very fresh. For the entree, my boyfriend got the special black pasta with seafood and I got the rabbit. The seafood was a little too fishy-tasting. The rabbit was very tender and the meat fell right off the bone, but the sauce wasn't salty enough and didn't complement the flavor of the rabbit. The vegetables on the side weren't that good but the mashed potatoes were. Overall the rabbit dish was good though. For dessert, my boyfriend got the peach sorbet, which was served in a frozen peach :-) and I got the delicious chocolate cake with hazelnut sorbet on top (mmmmm...) AND I also got the tiramisu, which wasn't that good - it was kind of bitter on the inside, even though the cocoa powder on top wasn't. In conclusion, although this restaurant doesn't have the most amazing fantabulous food, it is still tasty and the service was outstanding! I would go back again.

    Disappointing

I was very disappointed in the food. My friend had the Gnocchi, which he did enjoy, but I had the Bucatini All' Amatriciana. The bacon in my dish had the consistency of rubber, the onions had a horrible minty taste to them and the noodles were nearly the same as cardboard. The tomato sauce was good, and the service was excellent. I will give it that much... still it is not enough for me to ever return.

Not worth the time OR the money

Grilled Calamari was a nice start and we were excited about the meal. Then came the food. The Amarone Salad (their namesake) had very little iceberg lettuce, one piece of artichoke, one piece of mozzerella, for 9 dollars it was really disappointing. The chicken parm was also underwhelming. For the price, there are about 10 better italian restaurants in Hells Kitchen....Basilica is less than block away and Pietrasanta is across the street.

    Pros and Cons

We got to the restaurant and what appeared to the be the owner saw us walking in and called for one of the waiters to come attend to us. I was confused to see the waiter get up from one of the dining tables with a group of people and take us to our table. He was so well dressed in dress attire you would have never guessed he just served food. And why was he sitting there with the other staff at a table eating I will never know. LOL After checking out the site I already knew I was going to have the Crab Cake Salad. My boyfriend ordered pasta. The bread was a little bit hard. Actually very hard. The Olive oil softened it up though. The water was always coming and our well dressed waiter was always there looking to see if we were ok but never asked. He did ask though when bread was running low if we wanted more. So I guess he knows when people want to be bothered. Our food came fast. Man was I disappointed in the Crab Cakes. I could swear to you they bought those things in the frozen food isle with the way they were shaped. Definitely not hand made. Ive made fresh crab cakes myself, have ordered them from many places and even eaten frozen ones. They never have looked like the ones I was served. Didnt taste like real crab meat. The amount of Mesculan lettuce was pathetic. Four bites it was gone. The pesto sauce that was on the salad was warm!! Not room temp, but warm!! My boyfriends pasta was good. The shrimps and scallops were just a little bit bigger than shrimp you get at a fast food chinese place which makes it TINY. Though there were many pieces. Sauce was good. Prices were decent since it was the city. My portion was ridiculous but my boyfriends pasta was not. Would I go back there agian? Probably. The best pasta in the city Ive seen so far FOR THE PRICE AND PORTION. Not taste wise. Nice setting too.

Good Place at the Right Time

Good food, good service here. We had reservations, and we still had to wait about 10 minutes, which bugged me a little. However, as we began to eat, the restaurant emptied... everyone went to the theater! Great! The trick with this place is NOT to go when there is a pre-theater crowd. The "rush" fades, and then diners & waiters alike can relax. I would NOT suggest going here pre-theater. The place is a zoo then.
