Many tapas places (although I would hesitate to call this one) tend to feature overpriced & under-portioned food which, on a good night, will deliver a few high points in a sea of mediocrity while also featuring a loud, cramped & yuppy-fied atmosphere. Alta, on the other hand, offers food that is unique & delicious with portions that are generally not tiny (5 small dishes were enough for me and my companion). I highly recommend the bistilla, lamb meatballs & bacon-wrapped dates. The atmosphere is relaxed with a European feel, vaulted ceiling & nice lighting. Overall, a really satisfying experience.

I'd like to describe Alta as a "hideaway" since it's tucked away on W. 10th and masquerades as a private residence. BUT, it's almost always crowded. No wonder--the food is amazing (though a little too salty last night) and it's the perfect spot for a group (taste everything!), a date (charming and romantic but not contrived), or an after work drink (perfect sized bites and impressive wine list). I insist upon trying the fried goat cheese and the brussel sprouts. They make brussel sprouts feel like a serious indulgence. It's hands down the best tapas I've had in Manhattan. Bon Apetit!

Had dinner at Alta last night - appetizers: the truffle suprise (very good) lamb meatballs (boyfriend loved them, I thought they were fatty), and spinach salad (excellent). For the main, I had the braised rabbit pasta which was excellent, and he had the shortrib which was also good but I think the rabbit was better. The atmosphere is great - sit upstairs for a quite date, downstairs for more lively scene. Great bar area as well.

I love the spot - it's incredibly cozy and the food is delicious. I just have to reply to the previous poster who commented that the portions are small. It's a small plates, tapas-style menu. There really aren't any entrees, just many appetizer-sized selections, designed to share. I am definitely looking for an opportunity to take advantage of the "order everything on the menu" deal... best to be shared with 7+ people.

The atmosphere of the restaurant (layout, lighting, decoration) is amazing. The staff is also ver kind and helpful. My only complaint is that the portions are very small, after sharing an appetizer and having a an entree, I was left craving for more. Suggest the lamb meatballs!
