The staff was friendly and helpful. Service was marvelous. The food was fantastic -- and, we will return to try various other options. Those already noted are delicious (esp the potatoes!); also not to miss: spinach salad; crema dessert; lamb meatballs, mussels; goat cheese. Atmosphere is romantic and very fun. Great use of the space, and lighting is just right.

With a basement entry and no obvious sign, Alta is really a bit of a hidden treasure. The interior is dimly lit, and the music is latin. The food is quite good, though portions are very small and the drink menu is limited but very diverse. The best part is the HUGE second floor with a balcony view of the dining area below. A really unique, special tapas place. They open at 5:30, and don't serve until 6pm, but get there as early as possible - it fills up fast any night of the week!!

While not authentic Spanish tapas (try Sol y Sombra on the UWS for that), the tapas here are innovative and delicious, hands down the best in NYC. Even humble red bliss pototoes become etherial when "smashed", flash fried and topped with smoked-trout creme fraiche. Oh. My. God. So many good choices. You've never heard of the wines by the glass but they're yummy. The standout drink is white sangria made with pineapple juice, the most refreshing drink of the summer. You won't want to leave. Staff is knowledgeable, nice and quick. You could miss it walking by but once you find it you'll be back, bringing friends.

The ambiance at Alta is wonderful. The cathedral ceilings and industrial finish of this 100+ year old site is quite beautiful and the new owners (3 yrs) have done a great job of retaining it's beauty. The food is very good as well - I highly recommend The Philadelphia Surprise and the Brussel Sprouts. My only 1 complaint would have to be our server who while very knowledgeable of the history of the retaurant, didn't offer too much direction on the menu. All in all, I would definately revisit Alta and recommend it to friends. Oh, and the Sangria is potent with it's secret ingredients... which is a good thing!

I came here recently w/my bf and two of my friends. I've been here a few times before and couldn't wait to bring my friends. We had such a lovely time. We ordered lots of diff. plates and thouroughly enjoyed all of them. I don't think there was one thing that wasn't touched. We were never rushed. We received food as it was done which was nice since the food never seemed to stop coming. This is one of my favorites restaurants in the city and it's so cheap. It's absolutely amazing.

Dining here on a recommendation from a friend, we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! Tapas-style food was excellent (don't miss the crab cannelloni and the braised rabbit ), with an impressive wine list and diverse food menu. The food was a good value (do not expect entree portions: these are tapas), innovative and consistenly good, and the staff was helpful and straightforward. I would recommend it to all those who appreciate an off-the-beaten-track gem. The subtle, unpretentious yet elegant experience ranks at the top of this foodie's list. I will , undoubtedly and wholeheartedly,go back time and time again !!!
