Great Food, cozy venue
Went on Friday 3/13/09. It was so cozy and quiet--perfect for catching up with a friend. The hostess and waiter were very attentive, but not at all overbearing. My caesar salad was good, but I have had better. My salmon was so, so good!! Like, I had the first bite and couldn't talk for a minute kind of good. Delish! I cleaned my plate! For two people who ate two salads, two fish entrees, and had three glasses of wine, the bill came to $87 (with tax). I recommend!

Big Mistake
My husband and I went for an early Friday dinner. The place was empty except for us and 1 other table. The music: "Time After Time" and "That's What Friends Are For" blaring on the speakers. Not good. The menu should have been a clue to the food quality. I had read online that the oysters were great, but they were puny and gelatinous. I did not feel like they were fresh at all. I ordered scallops because I am dumb...I should have realized I was at a STEAKhouse. They were frozen and all I could bring myself to eat was the white rice on my plate. The bread at the beginning of the meal was inedible along with the frozen butter. My husband's steak was good though. We had a $100 meal and I left hungry.

i highly recommed alonso's
my husband and i came to new york from london for our 10th wedding anniversary. we had wanted a meal that would always think of new york, so we chose a steakhouse. i did lots of searching on the internet and decided upon alonso's. i booked a table for 7.30pm on thursday 19th july. the street was quiet and i hoped i was in the right place(passing 10th police precint). A hostess took us inside and showed us to a table. wow, what a place. small, but plenty to look at..all dead of course, but still, an impressive collection of animals. luis the server(the only server) was wonderful all evening. he helped us choose the right meal. my husband had the surf and turf and i had the porterhouse. we added sides of fries and onion rings and a great bottle of new zealand sav blanc. i was a bit worried about having to get through 17oz of meat, but with a little help from my husband i was fine. if you want a smaller portion, go for the surf and turf, even though it is the most expensive meal on the menu. apart from us, there were 2 tables of couples, a group of 4 lads and a table of 3 definately gay guys. i dont know how luis might cope if the place was full, but the food was great and so was the service. we highly recommend you try it out, as we will definately go there again when we go to new york.

Steakhouse and not a seafood restaurant!
We started out with a dozen Steamboat Oysters and that was a terrible mistake. They were not fresh or meaty at all. (Let’s just hope it was bad timing and not always the case with seafood at Alonzo’s.) The two of us ordered the porterhouse and filet. Both were deliciously medium rare. Great cremed spinach. Very happy with the attentive and friendly service. The setting was comforting and just the right lighting. Warning: DO NOT order The New Yorker and The Hooker coffee drinks for dessert. They were watered down. We didn’t mind the stuffed game above us either. Overall experience was good.

Why?
If you are going to pay the prices they ask, pay 3-4 dollars more and go with the traditional steakhouses. Why pay above average prices for below average food. I hope that menupages will post this so people can be honelty informed.

Pleased like never before
My friend alex and I have been going to Alonso's for a couple of months since the first time that we went into, we are from jersea citi and we came in thinking that it was a butcher's shop, mistake the best steak house ever not to mention those crasy animal heads hanging on the walls with a music sound so nice that we could keep our conversation without any problems. Alex and I were pleased at once on the temperature of his steak, since he is picky as hell with his meat. Luis our waiter sugested the best wait to do it and brought us our dinner and it was doneright not sending it back as we normally would anywhere else Every other week we come for dinner, because we loved it. the oysters are great nice and fresh ofcourse we have to ask Luis everytime to picked them for us and he does as ussual a great job. keep it up Luis and I hope you guys stay there for ever.

Extraordinary Steakhouse
I have been to Sparks, Peter Lugers, Gallaghers and Ben Bensons. Alonsos is right up there with the top steak houses I have been to at a price that is well within reach. Porterhouse steak was excellent with traditional spinach and mashed potatoes. Little neck clams served beautifully. Cocktails and wine also excellent. I am not too big on all the stuffed creatures hanging over my head, but this is an extradinary steak house.
