Okay, but excellent view
Alma is okay, not great. It is really overpriced and I personally make better Guacamole than they do. The tres leches cake was good and I recommend it. I just cannot justify spending so much money on just okay Mexican food. Save your cash on the food and just have some drinks for the view.

over hyped
Yes you get a great of "the City" from the roof, but except for the appetizers, which were very good, the entrees were mediocre. Not worth the prices charged!

View, View, View
We've eaten at Alma 4 times and always managed to get a roof seat - even in the winter. They keep the roof all season. The food and drinks are excellent and the service is decent. We always call ahead and put our name in for the roof. We hang out at a mediterranean tapas bar close by while we wait. I love their chicken enchiladas and adore the guac. Everything is tastey. I've never eaten downstairs. Always prepare for a wait but call ahead and be as specific as possible. Our out of town guests are always blown away - great BK spot.

Overhyped
Based on previous reviews here & on a different site, we were excited to try this place out. There was a 2 hour wait for the rooftop patio so we ate in the main dining room. (Reservations on a weekend are a good idea.) All the windows were open there so we could still see the Manhattan skyline from where we were seated. The service in general was not good. Our waitress took our order then disapeared for the night. She never once checked up on us. We had to order more drinks from our busboy which should not have to happen. The drinks were strong (a big plus!) The cerviche left alot to be desired. The main courses were all average. The enchilada being the best of the group. This place was ok for Red Hook. The skyline was pretty but doesn't make it worth the prices. We had to chase down our waitress to get the check. I will not be returing.

Very Nice Experience
My wife an I had a wonderful experience at dinner last night. Food was wonderful. We both had Enchiladas. Mine with the mole sauce very good, added just the right amount of flavor and spice. My wife had the Chile sauce and loved it. The service was very good. Waitress didn't hound but always seemed to be near when needed. We ate inside (by choice) and the atmosphere was very nice. We only have two small complaints. One they can't control, it is a little chore to get there if you don't drive. But we decided it was worth a bit of hassle. The other was the menu was a bit small and didn't seem to be very flexible. But I don't think a person who is going because they like Mexican will have any problem finding a few things they would like on the menu.

good food and awesome view!
i will definitely be back to this place. the portions where pretty big and the food was really good, so i felt like i was getting my money's worth on the entrees. the drinks were also yummy. the view here is so wonderful, especially if you time it right to see the sunset.

Que rico!
I have eaten at Alma many times and never been disappointed. The food is far better than average, and the same gourmet Mexican meal in Manhattan would cost twice as much. I would indeed skip the overpriced guacamole, but the chilaquiles are a great appetizer, and the chile relleno is truly outstanding. Unfortunately, they seem to have retired their best dish: the sliced duck in a peanut sauce, but many other dishes are really good. The only catch is it's a bit of a hike from any subway (Begen on the F is closest). This is top-notch Mexican food, not your ordinary tex-mex place with refried beans and flavorless rice. And yes, the view is amazing.
