An East Village neighborhood gem that I could return to over and over again is Alder. The restaurant's aesthetic is sleek and minimalist, but the food is vibrant and exciting. The focus is on small plates with mostly familiar and accessible foods, but prepared and presented in a unique and special way. To start off, I had a cocktail. One of the things that I think is brilliant that Alder does is, they offer a few of their signature cocktails in half portions aka, "shorts".

When you read the rave reviews from NY's restaurant critics you sort of want to second guess your taste buds or at least I did. My take - based on the fois gras on ritz crackers I ordered - is that they still have a lot of work to do. I'm all for innovation and trying foods with unexpected combinations but I'd at least like to taste it. Either the fois gras was served too cold, too thin or simply overpowered by its cracker companion. Everything else I tried - mostly forgettable (because I simply don't remember) was...mostly forgettable. The pub cheese was nice. But it's pub cheese. A for the idea, C for execution (at least the night I dined).
