The brunch is worth it!
The brunch at Alcatraz is so worth the $11 price! I had the very tasty chilaquiles that comes with a bottomless cup of good coffee and muffins to start. The jalepeno corn muffins are my favorite. The service can be a little slow but who cares when you are having a leisurely brunch.

A definite gem of the area.
I had great service, and delicious food at an affordable price. The portion sizes were perfect. Everything I had tasted perfectly fresh and made me want more. So... My girlfriend and I wound up ordering several entrees and apps to take home. I would definitely recommend this joint. Oh, and I have ordered delivery from here as well and, it was just as good.

So disappointing!!
I'm pretty sure it's called Alcatraz because they serve prison food. Ate here with my husband, we sat at the window into the kitchen. If you are going to be able to see into the kitchen it should be clean. The stove top was covered in burnt on food. And call me crazy but I really don't like the idea of watching my burrito be cooked in the microwave then plonked on the plate. The guacamole was actually good but the chef/owner made it with his heads without gloves. The front of house guy is the partner of the chef I believe and they bickered like an old pissed off couple the entire time. Everything is nuked to death. Avoid like the plague unless you have a hankering for Rikers Island Mexican night

Best Mexican in the Neighborhood and Beyond
This neighborhood treasure if easy to miss when walking down Franklin Ave, but once you try it, you wont be able to forget it. Try the mahi mahi tacos, and you'll see what I mean. It's always byob with a $3 corkage fee, which they waive at brunch on the weekends. Ther prie fixe brunches are very relaxed and reminds me of staying at a bed and breakfast. Alcatraz is unsurpassed in value and in taste in the neighborhood.

Gorgeous food and ambience!
Not one for writing reviews and don't fancy myself a writer, but here goes. Had to check this place out for myself after using their prompt delivery service, being the food is some of the best Mexican in Brooklyn, and having seen posted photos of their interior. It's a tiny place, but infused with vibrant sunset colors and art work paying homage to its namesake: No not the prison, Alcatraz is actually the Spanish name for Calla Lilies and they abound fresh in the restaurant or depicted in Diego Rivera's paintings of El Vendadora de Alcatraces. It was packed the day we went, with both eat in customers and those waiting for pick up, somehow, it all seems to work; refreshing if you're picking up to wait in a room that is of coppery hues and candlelight and not of bullet-proof glass. Enough of the gorgeous atmosphere, now for the gorgeous food. Albeit tight, my boyfriend and I grabbed two free seats counter top facing the open kitchen, where through white prison bars (a clever touch to the infamous prison) we watched the chef prepare our meal. Like the art work, fresh ingredients and clever presentation of food abounds here. We started with guacamole, chunky and fresh as it should be and accompanied with hand cut tortilla chips still warm from the deep fryer. We split a Mahi Mahi taco, fresh fish in Negro Modelo beer batter with a chipotle aioli sauce that was out of this world. Ordered another one. The Mexican chopped salad followed this, a heaping helping of romaine, roasted corn, black beans, mango and other things with a toasted cumin dressing. Outrageously good! With their homemade signature drink; fresh watermelon-ginger-limeade (unreal) we washed down our final dish: Tampico Crusted Catfish with side of yucca fries. This was the daily special, and they HAVE to put this on the menu continuously. The chef crusted the catfish with a variety of tortilla chips that formed a thick crust locking in the freshness and aroma. It was almost like cutting into a Chicken Kiev, and the accompanying yucca fries I am still longing for. All in all, this was a gastronomic and ambient experience we will be repeating again and again.

Great Mexican Food!
I placed an order for pick up so I did not dine in. The food was excellent! Great Mahi and pulled pork tacos! Not too spicy, not overdone, not too dry. The burrito I ordered was also excellent. I will be ordering from here again. Just hope they eventually get a driver to my location.
