    2/27/08 - Gradual Improvement?

Generally, I agree with the negative reviews of the service. Today, however, I was treated with much more respect. I bought a cucumber to go along with my salad (it's cheaper that way than to have it put in your salad) and the lady was very impressed with my smart economic decision. She even asked me if I wanted salt for my vegetable! I was skimped a little with the onion in my salad. Otherwise, good experience today.

Good, if you can stand the yelling

I used to go here all the time when I first started work around the corner, but after a while, I simply couldn't take the rude cashiers anymore, and now I don't go as a matter of principle. Yes, the food is good and inexpensive, but you can find that at a lot of places in the area and still get treated with respect. It's funnyeveryone in my office knows about the rude cashiers, and so do the people who have posted here, but they are still working there, so either the management at Alan's doesn't care or they don't know. But they are losing business because of the way customers are treated therethey've certainly lost my business. So be warned: you'll get good deli food at prices that are good for Manhattan, but you just might also get treated like an idiot at the register.

    Beware of Salad Maker

I work a block away and go to Alan's for lunch all the time. I've recently stopped going because of the attitude I get from the salad maker. He just glares at me when I'm ordering as if it's the biggest hassle for him to make a salad. I also don't like the additional 75 cents per item. Good value otherwise though

    Quality Food

Alan's is a nice deli w/ good food for good prices. The salad bar is so fresh and they give you such a huge quanity for only 5 bucks and change and that's w/ tax included. The one thing or things that I don't like are the chicks behind the counter. It's like they are grumpy everyday, all day.

    Rude Cashiers

Salad service is great but it does not make up for the rude cashiers. They are offensive and rude to the customers every time I go in there. If it wasn't cheap and conveniently located to where I work, I would never subject myself to their rude remarks. Someone seriously needs to talk to them about manners and human decency. I recommend finding a better deli.

    Delivery not recommended

Their sandwhiches, when you go in there to watch over what they do, are pretty awesome. I walked in randomly one day and was very pleasantly surprised, althought the guy behind the counter made me repeat my order a few times, like he'd forget that I wanted extra tomato, etc etc, but that was fine. A lot of people manage to ruin tuna, but theirs was yummy. So at work a few weeks later I decide to look them up and order a tuna and bacon sandwhich on a sesame bun.. when I got it there was neither bacon nor sesame in sight. They knew this, and instead of calling me to see if i wanted to change my order, they just crossed out the price and subtracted a dollar.

    Feels like a Seinfeld episode

The food is great, best bang for your buck. The guys behind the salad and sandwich counters are great, fast and courteous. But no matter how good this all is you have to question whether or not it is worth the punishment from the girls behind the register who come so close to the infamous soup nazi from Seinfeld that it is laughable.
