A tight squeeze, but worth it
Sitting in the dining room (once you make it through the wait) is a very tight fit - they have to move the table if you need to get up. Diners are on top of one another, but the food is fabulous. More space and better atmosphere (and the same food) in the wine bar around the corner

I miss the old Al di La
Al di La used to be a favorite of mine and my boyfriend who's Northern Italian. Two years ago it was the BEST in New York. The baccalao spread, the polenta, the bresaola, the octopus, the raviolis, the service, they were the best. I bragged abvout this restaurant to all my friends, that they should go to brooklyn and make sure to visit this restaurant. I live in London now, and last summer, we went back to New York, to Brooklyn, and took two friends of ours to Al di La. When our order arrived, everybody had a hard time figuring out which plate belonged to whom because the dishes werent prepared properly. I couldnt believe it. My clam pasta was too oily. I swear it tasted like olive oil pasta. The pork dish that my boyfriend ordered wasnt served properly. Instead of serving it in little pieces, it was served as a slab, slightly breaded and smothered in olive oil. The italian salad resembled a ceasar's salad. My god! Only the prosecco was good. I couldnt believe it. In a span of two years the quality went down drastically. Maybe they changed management. I do not know. It was just SAD. It was a sad day for me because I looked forward to going back there and having all my favorites.

not quite the same
have been several times, in the past, I guess with the economy it is certainly not the 1 hour wait thing. But with that in mind, the wait staff was snooty. The food was over salted, not quite the same as it used to be, portions were small to say the least, and very pricey for what was on the plate. I never really got the al di la thing in total. It was good food, but not over the top.

stellar food; high prices
The food we ate last night at Al di La is probably the best we've had in Park Slope, maybe in all of south Brooklyn. Tortelli piselli (brilliant pea ravioli in a buttery sauce), charcoal-grilled chicken with killer mashed potatoes, and tagliatelli with a creamy, meaty ragu. Service, while good-natured, was off-kilter at times - we stood at the doorway for about five minutes before a server so much as looked at us, and another three minutes before we were approached by a host. Once we were seated at a communal table, our server assumed we were a party of four with the couple next to us, and even after we clarified she continued to talk to all four of us at once about specials and drinks, which was a little TGI Friday's of her. One of the downsides of communal dining is that it was obvious that the folks to our left apparently didn't order as well as we did - while we loved everything we got, they appeared to really dislike a spinach-based pasta dish (it tasted like "spinach bathed in olive oil," one said). And the ladies to our right wouldn't stop talking about how expensive everything was vis-a-vis portion size, which is a fair point - it's quite pricey, at about $15 for a 2-oz pasta serving and $24 for entrees.

child sized portions
I think that charging $14 for pasta for lunch is okay. However, the portions are just adequate enough for a child, not an adult.

4.5 Quality all around
Well worth the effort of eating here, better than 99 percent of Manhattan Italian Restaurants, including those overpriced places in Little Italy.
