I ordered dinner tonight from Akita, influenced by all the positive reviews. I'm a little bit of a sushi freshness snob, but yuck, the salmon in the Philly roll and the yellowtail in the negihamachi (yellowtalk + scallion) both were quite "fishy" tasting -- in other words, not good fish, or even so-so fish. The Philly roll is a remarkably forgiving roll, especially if you like plenty of wasabi in your soy sauce as I do, but, urgh, I just couldn't struggle through it. The shrimp tempura roll was messy, but tasty, but this doesn't save Akita when the fresh fish is so *not* tasty. I typically don't mind eating "so-so" sushi as long as it's not bad, and especially if it's a deal, but I doubt I'll give Akita another chance. The sushi was not good and it wasn't incredibly expensive, but also not cheap. FYI - I have never had sushi in the UES before, as a business traveler this was only my second time staying in this area (and I've rarely eaten near the hotel). So the people who are saying this is the best in the UES may still be correct, if the sushi around here is subpar, or if Akita just doesn't care about their delivery sushi, or if they don't care after 9:30pm. But for $35 for 4 normal maki delivered, I'm not particularly motivated to give them another chance.

Have been going here since they opened and I couldn't be happier to have such a terrific place near by. The food and the staff make eating here a treat.

I just ordered take out for the first time from this UES hidden find. The food was great and the sashimi and sushi was big and fresh. The delivery was fast and friendly. I will absolutely order from here again.

Akita is best sushi place in the neighborhood. The staff are great and very attentive. The rolls are bigger than most other places I've been to and are so good. The best thing they have is the lunch special. For $7.95 you get 2 rolls, salad and soup. It's never crowded and has a nice atmosphere.

We ordered delivery here, and got the sashimi deluxe for 19.95 and the spicy tuna roll. The sashimi was fat and fresh, and probably twice the size for what you normally get at other UES sushi/sashimi places. It was delicious! We normally don't get filled up on sashimi, but the two of us of felt really full at the end of our meal. Definitely will order from here again.

I was hesitant about trying out a new sushi place, but the place turned out to be a great find. The quality and the cut of the sushi was very good. The service was great (the place isn't too busy yet). I hope it sticks around for a while. We need a decent quality neighborhood sushi place around here.

Whereas most sushi restaurants in NY are hostile (particularly in mid-range price ranges), these guys are always kind and efficient. They provide fantastic service and very good food. My only disappointment was with their spicy yellowtail (which was a little mayonaise heavy), but otherwise, this place is highly recommended.
