I ate here last summer and really enjoyed the food. The dinner menu is moderately priced but the cuisine is authentic. The owner even sat down with us after dinner it was a Sunday and the crowd was dying down. We asked the owner about Kabul and life in Afghanistan. We really enjoyed our dining experience.

This is one of my fav Afghan places in midtown. The food is really tasty especially the spicy chicken with rice. It's what I order on those staying in nights...yum.

I disagree with prior review about delivery time. I've been ordering from here for over 8 years -- from two different buildings: One building is about 4 blocks away and delivery time averages from 10 to 20 minutes. My new building is 7 blocks and one avenue away and it takes a bit longer, but still averages 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, which I think is reasonable. Food is great, plentiful and reasonably priced. I just miss eating there in person, since I'm further away and don't have much time for lunch. Recommend the Tandoori Half chicken or the spicy chicken (almost the same but a tiny bit spicier).

I have been coming to the Afghan Kebab House #1 for 2 years now at least a few times a month and each time I have eaten there the food has been outstanding...I have never been disappointed. The meats are cooked to perfection every time. The service is outstanding as well. There is usually one waitor who waits on all the tables in the establishment. He is very kind and extremely capable and has a good rapport with returning customers as well as the new ones...the place runs like clockward. The only downside (which to me is not an issue) is that it is small. So large parties may find it problematic to accomadate many people. All in all, without a doubt, I would highly recommend the Afghan Kebab House. You will not be dissapointed!

I took a group of people here. I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Nothing but good things to say about this place.

We started going there when the restaurant was just a hole in the wall with a stone oven to bake Afghan-style bread. That was l-o-n-g ago. We are in the neighborhood, so we eat there frequently. Our children, now grown and married with their own kids, love to drive in to the old neighborhood to eat at Afghan Kebab. The food is best ordered and eaten then and there. Deliveries tend to be slow (we're less than 6 blocks away) and is delivered warm, at best. This is a relatively inexpensive restaurant with walls covered by Afghan scenes and symbolism. It's just a long, warm, narrow place with good service, really tasty food and amenable waiter(s). Go there! But not too often. We want to get a table without waiting!

I order and eat here about once per week. I love the food! I will agree that service is far better if you call ahead and just pick up the food because they are pretty accurate about it taking 15-20 min - sometimes closer to the 20 min - but I feel it is worth the wait. I have never waited an hour for a delivery but I have waited 30-35 min before. When I dine in sometimes I wait for a long time as well - especially if they are busy and it is a thur or a wkend night - but I could say that about most of the restaurants along 9th ave on any of these nights. But you should def go here - call ahead and pick it up or dine in if you are not in a big rush. The food is worth being patient for!
