A Taste Of Seafood
Posted by Uptownundertaker on 06/09/2010
I was in the mood for some seafood and didn't feel like driving to city island. Coworkers suggested Taste of Seafood. It was in the afternoon and there weren't any long lines or a crowds yet when we placed our order. The disconnected dude behind the counter had a lot of attitude. We are professionals in the service business and we tried being pleasant. Sadly one of my coworkers couldn't take it anymore and unleashed her "tude" on the poor soul. Besides the unnecessary attitude, the food was excellent.

We arrived at 12:30, waited in line for 30 mins to place an order and waited another 30 minutes for food. The young boy at the counter, offered very poor customer service and with each dish I ordered that was not available, he was never forthcoming with any other recommendations! "You have corn nibblers?", "No" was his flat response. You have iced tea? "No" was his response. "You have this or that? Another flat no, until I finally asked well what do you have? He pointed mutely to the menu. Frustating to say the least, we had to ask if our food was ready only to find out it had been sitting behind the counter for almost 30 minutes. The fried fish, shrimp, and okra were good but overrated and too expensive for the poor service! Of all the shrimp and chip joints in Harlem, A Taste of Seafood will never have to worry about my money again!

I went to ATOS this weekend after reading the glowing reviews on this site. I've always wanted to taste their food but was always discouraged by the long lines (when it was a take out only restaurant). The new restaurant made me excited to try it, an happy about the possibility of sitting and dining in. I was surprised to see it almost empty on a weekend afternoon, but after my visit I understood why. The restaurant itself is pleasant looking, but upon entering there was an annoying odor that was not only fishy (a fish joint should smell a little fishy), but also reeked of stale food. I still wanted to taste the fried fish everyone was talking about so I decided to ignore the smell and order anyway. My mistake. When I got to the counter the young man who looked like he should be taking orders looked at me stupidly and acted like he was so busy with a phone order and a conversation with one his other (4) co workers. Even when he got off the phone ther was no "hello, may I help you," no "Hi, what would you like today?" So of course, I just told him what I wanted. The food was pricey, I wasnt offered any lemon juice to put on the fish, and when I asked one of the young men for some he made a face (as though I asked for some grey poupon or caviar or something) and said "no, we dont have none." Annoying. I ordered 4 pieces of fish with a side of mac and cheese and collards. The mac and cheese was very tasty and the fish was good as well. The collard greens were too vinegary and not good at all. I didn't eat my entire meal, and threw alot out. I didn't enjoy dining in at this restaurant at all. To top it off the bathroom was not clean, and was a funky mess. Always a bad sign. Will not be returning to this restaurant. They have some serious game stepping up to do.

I've been curious about A Taste of Seafood since my friend came from there one day with these giant size shrimp. I've been reading the reviews on menu pages for a month now and yesterday was the first time I went and OMG!! I had the catfish and candied yams. I am in love. I am going back today and everyday!

This is absolutely my FAVORITE restaurant in Harlem. The food is soo good and worth the wait. If you go there during the day there is usually not a long line so if ever I am free during the day I make suure to go here. The witing fish, mac and cheese and shrimp are amongst my favorites there!! Also the candied yams!!! yuummmm! Try it!!!

pros. - love the new location. the decor is a step up. much more space, more seating, even more space upstairs. directly right across the street from where they used to be. - the food is still great. everything is still pretty much what it used to be. they expanded the menu. they also now do debit. they don't do credit anymore. i don't know why. cons. - they need to be more personable. some of the staff does have attitude, and on the wrong day, you might have to curse someone out. people are putting money into their establishment, and you're not paying for anything cheap at a taste of seafood. - the wait. they really need more registers, and servers. they hired a heap of staff, and it seems they're not being put to good use. - the prices. i believe they need to cut some deals for their customers. lower the prices on key popular items on the menu. it encourages people to still patronize, while giving an extra incentive to come.

I come here once in a while when I want to fill soul food seafood crave. Truth is I'd come here a lot more often if the service was better. It is a little maddening to have a cashier ice grill you with an attitude, even when you are trying to be polite.
