An excellent value. Dont' miss it
I came here with a friend and had the Prix Fixe menu. I was delighted by the amazing food that this tiny but efficient restaurant turns out. The food was delicious. The owner attentive and charming. The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere perfect for conversation. They have 3 vegetarian options, but I tried the duck which was excellent. The only thing I would change is the tables, which had a strange varnish on them which makes them feel oddly sticky. N.B. We didn't know it was BYOB, but that wasn't a big deal for us.

The real deal!
It's straight forward, simple, and delicious. Real serious care and thought went into the food quality and combination of flavors. Everything we tried was surprising and fantastic. The owner is genuinely kind and it's obvious that he loves his restaurant. I will go back until I've tried everything on the menu.

Who would have guessed?
You could walk right by it and never see it, but DON'T! Great food. Charming owner. A neighborhood treasure.

A Cafe Gets An "A"
My husband and I recently went to A Cafe on our wedding anniversary and LOVED this place! Heart broken over the closing of Metisse (Brazillian and French cuisine with an intimate and classy atmosphere), we were intrigued by the exotic combination of French and Caribeean fare offered on the menu. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was intimate and relaxing and the service was not rushed. We tried the pheasant paté, the mousse truflée, the duck confit, the rabbit sausages and had the gateau au chocolat fondant for dessert. It was perfectly paired with our Oregon pinots from EIEIO vinyards and was a great deal with the prix fixe special. Especially enjoyable was the chef's take on the duck confit. The jerk treatment and citrus sauce made a bistro staple into something truly unique. Also incredible is how they are able to prepare the food in their tiny kitchen! If any criticism could be given, and only of the constructive nature, there could be some more vegetable offerings on the main courses. (Of course you could solve that by pairing the avocado appetizer with a vegetarian course.) Also the addition of candles at the table would make the atmosphere perfect. Go. You will not be disappointed. We intend to come back again and again.

Lovely place
This cafe is quite the bargain. A great atmosphere and an affordable menu, as well as BYOB make it one of the few reasonable restaurants in Manhattan. The food was quite good, not excellent, but certainly well worth the value. And the waitstaff were very nice. It is a lovely, cozy little place and somewhere I will enjoy returning.

Nice effort--but not going back
Pluses--A truly fine effort, lone server scrambling, lone cook in tiny kitchen must work like the devil (there is a long wait for food), apparently home-made decor yields a pleasant, offbeat, romantic environment. Reasonable price--maybe the low-rent neighborhood makes this possible-- and the BYOB policy is good. BUT the food disappoints. Seasoning much more imaginative than inspired--certainly neither subtle nor balanced. And some of the choices are baffling; who ever thought avocados should be cooked? No real vegetables served with meat dishes ex. cold pre-cooked cous-cous (yes, some dishes are vegetarian) and nothing fresh, green. Regretfully not planning to return.
