Best Gem in the Theater District. It was a bit of a walk (two long blocks) but the food was excellent, the scene was excellent (a few Law & Order personalities dining at the same time!!!), and service as good as you could expect in a packed midtown restaurant in the heart of the theater district. I had a hard time hearing who I think was the owner but she seem endearing in ensuring that we got seated and our veno right away. The staff seemed rushed to service everyone and respond to her beck and call but I found that very "un-american service industry like" ...so when in Italy or and Italian family owned restaurant expect either the mob or a crazy lady!!! The design and decor of the place (lots of candels) defininately made us feel welcome and outside the madness of New York City for the entire dining experience. We would eat there every night if we could!!!

My husband and I have tried most of the italian restaurants in this area and for some reason we always end up going back to 44 SW as our reliable stand-by. The food is usually pretty good, or at least one of the better in the area. Service is always slow and you usually need to track down your waiter at the end of the evening to get the check. Its always busy on weeknights with the theater crowd so come early or try after 8pm for a more lesiurely meal.

Took my 3 and 7 year old out for birthday pre theater dinner. The food, service and atmosphere was great. Would recommend to families and couples. The appetizers were terrific. Got us out on time to see show! Took the time to wish daughter a huge birthday and she loved the personalized attention. Definately would go back

Went for the first time last night. The reviews were so good, we decided to try it since we were in the neighborhood. The atmosphere was very nice and I enjoyed the music that was playing. The seating was comfotrable. But, the food was totally average. Nothing special. And, the service is poor. The waitress forgot to give me my wine. She then served two main courses and brought out the 3rd one five minutes later. I wouldn't go back. Did I say the food was just average?

With all the choices for restaurants in NYC, we always want to try someplace new, but when we want a sure thing, we always go to 44SW. The food is always excellent, the prices are always reasonable, and the atmosphere is always pleasant. It's cozy in the winter and in the warmer weather, they open the wall of doors and you can feel the energy of the city while enjoying the breeze with your glass of wine. I highly recommend!

This is the best restaurant in NYC! I have been eating there for about 8 years- The first time I had 15 college students with me- We were looking for a place to eat - and even though this is a small business, they took us in right away- no attitude, no problem- just great service and even better dinners- We have been loyal customers since- The food is outstanding and the cooks are wonderfully accomodating--- This is a family owned restaurant and you can tell by the food- just amazing- Sort of a 'hip-Italian' with a flair of country cooking- and the BEST ceaser salad anywhere! Over the years they have grown and are frequently packed. Make reservations- leave your pretentious "I'm a snooty eater' tude outside their door- and indulge in GREAT COOKING!.... Over the years, my old students from that first dinner frequently email me of stories about revisiting 44 South West on dates, with their new spouses, with family.... This is THE place to eat- you won't break your wallet either! We're going back tomorrow night---!

I went expecting a great restaurant, from reading all of the reviews here, and was a little disappointed. The first disgruntlement I had was when we walked in, the lady asked us how many, then walked away, about two minutes later, she cam back and seated us, after busing a table. This just made me feel a little less important than a table that's all. next, was the service. Overall, our waitress did a fine job, the entrees came out in a timely manner AFTER we had finished our en trees. But she just seemed SO TIRED, Which I can understand, but at least put a smile on, I mean, really. The last thing that took me by surprise, was the volume level in the restaurant. It was soooo loud! When I went to their website and saw the pictures, it looked like a nice quiet cozy place, but I found it to be very loud, and almost hard to carry on a conversation, which you can't blame the owners for, because they made it look elegant, like you'd want to be quiet, but appearently, no one go the message. The food however, was excellent, and for this reason I would highly recommend this restaurant. Especially anything with marinara sauce. Mmm... Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. In terms of the overall value of this restaurant, I would have to say that it was overall a positive dining experience, and will most likely be returning to this cosy restauraunt.
