maybe it was an off day?

Service was poor because there was one server for maybe 8 patrons and he took my takeout order. That aside, the "homemade spinach ravioli" was store made plain ricotta ravioli and the "hand-cut" fries were charred beyond recognition. I doubt that the food would have been better eating in.

This place has slipped a lot!!

Had a great dinner here about two years ago and it was great...so we went back this time and were disappointed .Our waitress was not on her game(took the order and brought the check) and the food was very average. It is obvious they are cutting corners.Bread was cold and not up to standards for NYC Italian. Salads were brought with the appy and we asked for them to be served with entrees.Entrees came and salad followed (10 minutes later).Roasted peppers appy were right out of a jar(5-6 peppers buried in lettuce??).Caeser Salads were puny and had about two croutons apiece.Pasta dished out cafeteria style, not very inspired. They are off the list.It was also a bit annoying to have the owner sitting about 3 feet from us and watching for most of the meal.Off the list for next visit..sorry.

    Chicken Marsala

They have the best chicken marsala around. I live in the neighborhood and have tried the marsala in many places. They by far have the best. Great Sangria as well.

    Great Find

A business colleague and I were looking for an Italian restaurant in the area. While browsing the menu outside the restaurant, a little Italian lady insisted that we come inside for dinner. I was a bit hesitant but once we were seated, I am glad that we decided to stay. The entire dining experience was a definite highlight of our stay in New York. The food was great--the service was fantastic--and we even got chatting with several of the usual people that frequent the restaurant. Although "Momma" drug us in the first time, we came back a couple of nights later on our own accord because we loved this place so much.

    horrendous service...

My friend and I went to the restaurant, and had to sit on an uncomfortable stool meant for 1 person, for a good 15 minutes before we got a table. The manager even made us order our food ahead of time while we waited, which was so uncomfortable and unprofessional. When we finally sat down, we waited. And waited. And waited. The waitress NEVER came to our table...except to bring us our check (and say "thanks" without even looking at us)! To get drinks and to request a check, we kept having to flag over the manager. The only person who served us all night was the busboy. We called over the manager again to ask if we could give the tip to the busboy, since he was the only one who actually served us. He replied "We don't do that here." So we paid without leaving a tip. I was so disgusted with 1) the service, and 2) the manager's unaccommodating attitude, that it ruined my dinner. It's too bad, because the chicken marsala was actually the best I've ever had (sweet and delicious with perfectly sized mushrooms). The bread at the table was mediocre at best though. If you care at all about good service, I would avoid this place.

    strange experience

We were having a lovely dinner at 44 Southwest, the food was great, the wine was good and affordable, the service was lovely and fast, and all was well. Until this tiny older Italian woman started swearing and yelling at our server in the middle of the place! The poor server had to stand there and take it numerous times in front of her co-workers and customers, while she had been doing a great job. As a former server many years ago, I had a hard time not saying something, and the experience totally ruined an otherwise great dinner. It made me never want to go back to this place, which is a pity, because the food was so good.

    Excellent for Lunch or Dinner

Working in Midtown Manhattan, I've been a regular customer for 4 years. Their lunch specials are top-notch and extremely reasonable, especially considering the generous portions and delicious bread. Dinner can be crowded at times, especially on Friday nights, but is definately worth the wait.
