Our senior management team came to New York from various parts of the country, the UK and Australia for a workshop. I was in charge of arranging an activity for the group. People told me about parties they had been to here that were great. I went a week ahead of time with a friend to check it out. We had a lovely evening. The staff was attentive and the food was good. Based on that experience, I looked forward to our event. We had the exact opposite experience. The staff treated us poorly, including the manager. They gave us a space that was too small for the number of people we had and then gave us a lot of grief when we complained. The drinks were medicore. The food was edible but nothing to write home about.

The food, drinks, service, and even the suited-douche clientele at this place are all reprehensible. We're talking truly, truly, truly awful. But the view - the view! You're on a roof 20 floors up and you're like thisclose to the empire state building and there are these gorgeous vistas to the west and south. My god, the view. It makes you forget that you're surrounded by jerks.

I loved the atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly. Nice views and a lovely rooftop bar. We went to meet friends at the bar and we were pleasantly surprised to find warm blankets and robes to enjoy the heated roof on a very cold evening.

So it's obvious you aren't going to 230 Fifth for the food or drinks. The wine list is non-existent and there are just a few reds and whites available. The drinks are expensive and not even made very well. The food isn't much better either the buns for the sliders were so dry and everything else was pretty much just bar food. However, the view and scene is pretty amazing. It's a good place to go and get a drink, especially with out of town people or as a celebration to start an evening. Try to get there early though, because tables fill up pretty fast.
