    Could've been better

I finally stopped in this place for dinner and ordered off the tapas menu. I was not impressed. I had the shrimp in garlic sauce which was ok, better for dipping bread in, the steak wrapped around asparagus, the cheese and meat platter and arugula salad with goat cheese. All were just ok, I wouldn't really recommend this place to anyone unless I had to. Try another new trendy restaurant on this block because this one was subpar and way overpriced.

Subpar Food & Ambience in the LES

Food was middle of the road to below par (except for a few dishes), prices were average for tapas (that is, overpriced), but ambience was poor. Was there with a group of 6 and were seated in a weird no-mans land at a giant picnic table on the cusp of the normal dining room and their converted summer outdoor area. I noticed others were seated in this converted outdoor area as well, which they had done up decently, but as my friend put it "if it was daytime, imagine what this place would look like..."

    Excellent!

Excellent - on 2 occasions, one a very large party - food was excellent, service and manager excellent, music great and not so loud that you can't hold a conversation without screaming. All around highly recommended, especially the chocolate souffle with a little port!

    Poor Food. Overpriced. Nice manager

I will be brief. the food here was subpar. The manager was nice enough to refund both our entrees after the food came cold and appeared overcooked. The food prices for what you get are also too high. I've regretfully been here twice.

    Just a drink

What a find! A friend and I were looking for glass of wine after work. We stumbled in on this extremely inviting space. The bartender was so engaging! (not to mention adorable) We starting discussing wines (it didn't hurt my companion was a sommelier). Well hunkzilla whipped together a tasting for us. His knowledge was just as sexy as his butt. Then we took a little tour to see what else was to be had here. AND what a surprise! Dark rustic furniture, an outside garden... I want to either host a party or bring a lover. We only had appetizers at the bar. Trigeros y Piquillos a la Plancha (grilled asparagus & piquillo peppers) and Ostras, (Oysters on the half shell) The both were ok. I mean how bad or great can they be. It is a bit pricey but, worth a visit.

    Poor service

I appreciate that this place gets busy but I have never encountered such a rude and unfriendly hostess. The food was very nice but the poor service and attitude means we will not return.

    Evocative of Madrid

Service: I have nothing but praises for the staff. Very friendly, unpretentious, accommodating and with a smile. Food...Finger licking good, I am mainly referring to tapas. We had "Datiles con Bacon" (Dates, bacon & almonds), which were succulent sweet dates wrapped in crispy bacon. Be forewarned, once you start you can't stop until they are all gone. To keep a balance of food we ordered a plate of vegetables, "Trigeros y Piquillos a la Plancha" (grilled asparagus & piquillo peppers), tender asparagus and juicy pepper. And to make our taste buds screaming in utter joy we treated them to a small plate of "Salmon con Mango" salmon gravlax with mango, a fantastic combination of flavors. Thinly sliced smoked salmon complimented by thin slices of sweet mango and capers. Make sure you form a full composition of the three to have a flavorful experience. As a final touch we ordered a "Paella de Azzoz Negro" (black paella with seafood & squid ink), now I have to say that this dish even though quite good was least impressive. The seafood was fresh but a little overcooked, paella was slightly salty and rice was a little too sticky. I think they could've done better. Keep in mind the paella portion is small, enough for one person, but perfect to share if you are getting tapas. Overall I had an exceptional time. Tapas and sangria were exquisite, service impeccable and glasses were unpretentious just like the ambiance. Tucked away on Clinton Street and discreet to a passing by scavenger, the charming 1492 remains to be untouched by glitz and glamour, loud music and fashion shows and most importantly you can actually have a conversation here. Romantic, authentic, quiet, exotic and evocative of Madrid.
