Good burger, not worth the attitude.

When I have to tell three people I'd like a table for two and am directed to some manager (maybe?) who leans against the bar chatting it up with the bartender for 4 minutes before acknowledging I'm there, I'm already in a funk about how this meal is going to go. After being ignored, I'm given a snarky attitude and told that since my husband isn't here yet that I'm "not supposed to be seated, but I guess since it's late, you can have that table". If you're going to give me the table, then why the attitude? If not, state your policy and I'm happy to wait. Just don't ignore me like that. However, if you DO seat me, then the service staff should offer water or a drink instead of ignoring me anyway until my husband arrives. I could have had a beer or two at the bar by now. The server was nice but obviously over this job. I'm a server myself, so I get it, but come on guys. If you all hate your job so badly, move on. It's painfully obvious no one cared I was there...so even tho I live in the neighborhood and work nearby, I'll probably not be back if I can help it. There's way too much competition out there for the customers to be bothered with such complacency. I'm in the industry, so I know. The burger is great, but the service is what I really remember. I guess the one star for service goes to the bartender who looked like he cared when I was being ignored by the manager. Thanks for trying, dude.

    good burgers, not moods

They offer large, pretty good burgers, a large bar with a variety of beer. The menu is sparse, I don't think they offer side orders besides french fries. Perhaps broccoli and watermelon don't mix? As other reviewers highlighted, the service is mixed, and sometimes they're quite rude. I can find other burger joints easily enough, so don't often put up with this place. also, it gets crowded certain nights, which may explain their perceived power, ie why be nice to customers when new ones keep coming in...

Preppy HQ, service sucks, not worth it

Is the burger good? Depends on what you like, it's a typical super buttered soft burger. If you've had a decent diner burger you've had this. The people who love it seem to be mostly married to nostalgia. However, my real complaints with this place are around the service and the atmosphere. First on the service... rude, impatient, and generally just not nice. Wife went there with her sister when the place was empty, happened to have our baby in a stroller, waitress was not nice to her for no reason (unlike me my wife is incredibly nice). Just not the kind of place you really want to visit. On the second point, OMFG this place is like fratboy headquarters. I grew up in a pretty waspy environment, and this is like going home. If you want to see bankers in short shorts with sockless loafers, wives named binky, and laughs so phony they sound like they were purchased at Brooks Brothers this is your spot. Seriously, it's not so absurdly prep, but it's kind of like a bad frat house reunion... think of the Omega fraternity in Animal House. Given, the UES is a restaurant wasteland (overpriced and awful). However, you can get a better meal at a place that's more fun and has better service. Hell, go to EJs up the street.

    Portion police

Firstly, JG's food is delicious and a New York gem that has managed to stay open because of it's delicious food and classic vibe. Secondly, (and the main topic of my review) the portions.... are not fat american sized but are remindful of a time when 60% of our society was overweight. So, go JG to sticking to what works. Stupid fat Americans.

    If u don't like it don't go

My favorite burger place perhaps in the world. Bloody bull, amstel light, salad with blue cheese, chili, cheeseburger and fries well done. Glad to hear some people hate it!

    Best burger place

I was introduced to JG's by a business partner who is an Upper East sider. Every time I come into NY from London or where ever I have to go to JG. The food is great, I love the atmosphere and the service is great. I wish they took card payments but that's a small compliant really. After a crazy day of travel and meetings it's the perfect place to 'step away'

Good food but pricey for what you get

Is it a good burger? YES! Does it cost too much? Especially since everything else is a separate charge? Unfortunately, yes. Plus, it's usually very crowded because people just like to hang out there (which is great unless you're just hungry and want a good burger). Also, the service can really vary (by the server) from nice to "I think I'm cool" which can really taint your experience.
