Little Overpriced but good
Excellent food, healthy, and baked items are fabulous! But $7 for a small cup of french onion soup that is not knock-your-socks off different from any other french onion I have tasted is a bit irritating. Salads are a bit small, but VERY good. But, $45 for an apple sponge cake is absurd. Ironically though, single serving baked items are reasonably priced however. Odd pricing. Good food.

Best Steak Au Poivre in City
We go here quite often and have always loved it for years. Great food and about the most attentive service to be found in the city....runs like a clock.....from appetizer to desert....there seems to be a server/runner for each item and all arrive in perfect timing....a great feat in itself given the size of Balthazar....hats off to Keith and his entire staff I say.....and oh yea, the folks that moan about a lackluster steak should kick up a few more bucks for the Steak AuPoivre.....it's about the best in the city.

Suprisingly Kid Friendly!
We had breakfast at Balthazar twice, and just wanted to say thanks to the wait staff for being so friendly and helpful with our 2 year old daughter. I highly recommend Balthazar for breakfast with a toddler - the food is great - a treat for mom and dad, plus lots of egg/toast options good for kids. The place has a great buzz to it which means noise is no problem, plus I think it opens at 7:30am, so perfect for those early risers. Definitely a nice way to get a bit of NYC but still toddler friendly. Enjoy!

Just a great place hey!
Our main dishes (steak frites and seared organic salmon) were right on! Service was timely, and the atmosphere, along with the action, a feast for the eyes!

Fine place just come early!
My friend and I came here a few weeks ago for brunch. The food was great and our server was very nice and helpful. Yes, this place is a little crowded but hey its a neighborhood place with good food.

Disappointing!
Attitude, cramped seating, ok food, incredibly noisy and overpriced. Not worth it!

Your time has passed
I had been eager to go to Balthazar for a very long time and finally made it last Friday night. It is just a big, noisy brasserie in the style of Pastis or Les Halles. The food was adequate (we had steak au poivre and steak'frites) or excellent (the salmon). The waiting staff was indifferent, although not rude. I arrived first and the very young and unimpressive hostess told me I had to wait for the rest of my party, at which point the savy and efficient man at the front desk said'"Of course she can sit down now!" After that triumph, the rest was indifference: I had to chase the waiter to ask for a drink while I waited, and in several occasions our table spent a few minutes trying to catch his attention. I don't think that the prices match the quality of the service nor the atmosphere, as it is not a very comfortable restaurant. The bar seemed very active with young people. Don't be fooled by the perennial mob of tourists gawking outside--it must be advertised prominently in travel guides!
